Has anyone rebuilt their Kobuta tractor engine using one of the ebay rebuild kits ?

My experience checking Diesel compression is with a 7.3L IHC and in that case I drilled out an old glowplug and made an adapter out of it. A lot simpler if you can find a ready made adapter. I have some experience spending considerable time and money fixing things that turned out not to be broke. That’s why I’m suggesting doing an actual compression test before tearing into it so you know for certain that it has a compression problem. I think you mentioned earlier that once started it goes to work just fine and that could be another sign that your compression isn’t all that bad.

Wow,a Kubota engine with cylinder liners!
I thought they were all parent bore engines.

I do say that I vastly prefer the idea of buying from a US based reseller than directly from China. So far have not heard back from Kumar Bros, I sent them a question through their "contact me" page of the website.

Dry liners. Tunnel type crankcase (I think that's what they call it) so you can pull the crankshaft out the flywheel end of the engine. Someone said these engines were originally designed to go in excavators, running 8+ hours/day at near max revs.

I'll sell you one of my M9's but it won't be as cheap as the compressor I sold you...... I have 2 you know.

Have you checked valve clearance yet? That would be my first check, then compression and a leakdown if compression was low.
