Man, the good old days. If ANYONE pulls off a meter nowdays, Except in a fire emergency, you could be looking at being arrested. Theft of public utility. One of my coworkers From years ago went thru this. He was working on a burn down, and pulled meter. The utility arrived later and called police. It was ugly.
Here in idaho a homeowner can wire his OWN home, as long as he lives in it for 2 years or more. Cannot wire a spec home. A homeowner CANNOT DO ANY underground service work. Has to be done either thru public utility or electrical contractor. Seems odd that they can wire their house, but cant be trusted to place wire underground.
Yep... found it very restrictive in WA State too... you would think the SF Bay Area would have them all beat but there are exceptions...
Never thought I could do a multi-family first time out but being owner occupied both sides it worked and then I also added the House Meter for one yard light and the garage where I still have 6 cars stored... a little overkill but this way zero tenant issues... been there and done that over a dumb 12 watt yard light at a managed property... utility, city, police all involved because the house tenant took out the bulb she was contractually obligated in her lease to maintain and the rear tenant said he safety was now in peril...
PGE is funny... I have reported energy theft in homes with squatters and nothing happens... police are not interested and PGE will eventually terminate on the pole but they don't seem to prosecute squatters...
Around the same time as my install many were facing the same problem... it was a way to drop older inner city homes citing antiquated electrical service...
I managed a single family where the owner had an electrical do the upgrade from 30 to 100 amp 240 volt.
Electrician hammered flat two pieces of #8 copper to bridge the meter socket... it stayed like this for months and I sent a certified letter to PGE... as manager I was not getting dragged into it...
City provided proof final was transmitted to PGE same day as approved and stickered...
When PGE finally set the new meter I asked about a bill for the months of no meter... was told it would be estimated and again I though here we go again... the make up portion was very reasonable... about $25 per month for 4 months... the gas portion paid on time each month...
Wish I could have kept all these I pulled from service... just for conversation... 80+ years of faithful service... the replacements only lasted a few years pending smart meters.
I still have a few single family homes with two wire meters and 30 amp service... so no welders going in yet...
The desire for 240 volt service and getting rid of Federal Panels drives most of the upgrades now... plus solar installs.
