What the heck makes a low pitched ugly growl in the night?

Around here - only animal that would stand his ground, in the shadows, and continue to growl/snarl - - badger. Coyote, raccoon, even cougar would exit my porch, enter the shadows, keep right on running.

You DO NOT want to mix it up with a badger. There is no question - you WILL loose.

Two Labradors we once had could make some serious growls. Albeit rarely - but when they did I was glad to be hearing it from their backside. Sounded like much larger dogs or....?

My stomach does. After that if your hearing range is good you'll hear a G10 eminating out below the stomach followed by my wife yelling as she lights matches.

Our German shepherd has a growl that I swear originates from her toenails. It will make your hair stand up and booty pucker.

Shes only growled a couple times. First time we were out for a walk after dark. I couldn't figure out at first what she was growling at. Couldn't see any critters, or eye balls when I shined the flash light around looking.

Neighbors had put out a bag of recycling. She wasn't happy about it.

We laugh, yet things out of the ordinary can get a pup's attention. I've seen my dog go apestuff when he sees the truck at the end of the day, if I have it parked in an odd place. Sometimes it makes me realize how much more alert I should be...
Everybody talks about "What a sweet dog he is", yet I've had friends stop by when he's home alone and they say he can sound downright ornery.

The only thing I've had stand its ground is a gator, hog and a dog. However a rabid animal will, like a raccoon.
