You put your DC outside...in Michigan?!?! I'd hate to see the heating bills!

The NFPA (and therefore your insurance company) requires that DCs vent outside UNLESS you have an abort gate installed that will prevent a fire/explosion from returning into the building. An abort gate and the controls necessary to operate it will make the DC itself look cheap. We just spent over $60k upgrading ours (using the existing fan, cyclone and baghouse).

I must have missed it, what's a DC?

Re: Big Barn痴 Retirement Farm Shop

Thanks for the compliment Big Barn.
Fine tuning the design calculations and interior pipe lay out. I have decided to use metal spiral pipe rather than PVC due to concerns of static electricity.
I will post more interior pictured as the project progresses

I placed the collector outside as interior space is at a premium and the stand is designed to allow the dust and chips to fall to the ground and as necessary I can remove the accumulation with the my tractor loader bucket. If I find wind driven dust to be a problem I can easily add some hooks and use a Dino firewood bag as a containment.

I知 really looking forward to not having to wade through an accumulation of planer chips every time I surface a few boards.

Some years ago when I was working full time I considered moving my shop from my rural location to the city.
It didn’t take long to figure out what the additional overhead would cost including permits for everything from air compressors to dust collectors.

In a former life I ran a retail establishment with 25 employees, overhead up the yeng yeng. Finally got smart and boiled my livelihood down to me myself and I. I elected to stay small and keep it all. Shop is mine, no employees, no OSHA. And now retired, I only take on work I really love, maybe on or two projects a month. If I need make up air for the DC in the winter i will crack a window.

Fair point on NFPA and insurance, but I read it as a home shop, whereas that would only realistically apply to commercial shops. Now that I read the latest reply, that may not be the case. And from being on TBN for years i also know that insurance requirements vary all over the map. I hear people say they have surcharges for wood burning stoves or could even be dropped for having one. I told our insurance agent we had one and he said "so what?" It made no difference at all (State Farm in WI).

I wasn't sure what an abort gate was so I had to look it up:

I have State Farm as well (also in WI) and I got the same response about my wood stove. As long as it's installed to UL standards it's all good. Also, it cannot be installed in a garage due to fumes.

Here's my wood stove install:

I was going to expose the brick on the chimney, but it was ugly as sin so I found ceramic tile that looks like brick and came in 2x8 (side of brick) and 4x8 (top of brick) sizes. I tiled the chimney, floor, and wall behind the stove. I also added the mantle made out of wood look ceramic tile. The pipe is double wall due to it's proximity to the wall. Even though the wall is covered in ceramic tile over cement board I decided to sacrifice a bit of heat off the pipe to make sure the studs wouldn't over heat and cause any fires.

That's the one good thing about the OSH Act - it only affects entities with Employees.

Not sure how the NFPA affects homeowners.

But Insurance Companies can say/do whatever they want. And you either toe the line or go looking for another.

Nevertheless. about 20 years ago our homeowners ins co had an inspector come look at our house and the result was "replace the roof or we drop you". About 10 years later we replaced the roof, because it seemed like it was time. All along with the same ins co...
