Mom was 6 yrs old when she rode the last train out of town on May 30 1931, thru the tunnel below our farm

and got off at the station below our farm.
Station just after this creek.

Stopped here with dad last summer. Overgrown where the roadbed and station were. No sign of the old trussel over the creek. Someone took the cut stones.

As a girl mom grew up in a small house near the station in town.

Just recently I figured out the house mom grew up in as a girl, based upon pictures I’ve been scanning. I drove dad by one day and he confirmed the house as the one. I remember mom talking about living in another house, but don’t recall her showing us the house. She was probably a young teen when her family moved to the house I knew.

Locally they called her Gallopin Gertie. There was still a bar with that name not long ago, maybe still is. The high rises still stand with the replacment deck, crossed it a zillion times. New bridge along side it as well.

google "death wobble" in trucks. Oscillation at its worst. One has to experience it to fully appreciate physics.

Thanks for posting that. Left me with a heavy heart.

This stuff needs posted on the "train" thread that's going on Buckeye.

I've had it happen in a couple Jeeps. Only way out is to slam on the brakes and almost come to a stop. Very dangerous. A couple years ago a man from our town was killed on the Interstate when his motorcycle went into death wobble and threw him off.
