Got my JD115M with 109 hrs. All fluids were original. So, I was a bit skeptical to use a shop vac when changing the trans filter, too. But, that’s what the Maintenance Guide recommends- page 30-3. Nonetheless, I screwed the filter off the housing just to the point that I could see fluid beginning to wet the gap between the filter and housing and had my wife hit the shop vac.
Worked like a charm. No fuss-no muss. Good luck.

I saw a guy try using a shop vac. RUINED the shop vac and, otherwise, made a great, horrid, bloody mess of the entire situation. May I suggest - drain ALL the hydraulic fluid into an appropriate container - change the filter(s) - pour the hydraulic fluid back in. Yes, it may take a little longer but you are almost guaranteed that the job will be a success and "clean".

Puzzled that there would be any fluid at the filler hole where the shop vac hose was sucking... something amiss.. Any idea what went wrong?

The nozzle on the shop vac was inserted too far into the hydraulic fill hole. The fellow was probably fortunate that there was not an explosion or fire. Or that he did not get electrocuted.

Well... there痴 a significant difference in application here...I placed the shop vac hose OVER the fill tube - not down inside the neck. The vac hose was a loose fit so, it was not pulling a total vacuum on the transmission housing.
It worked just fine.
And once again, the JD maintenance guide recommends that approach.

Yup, gotta laugh at that guy .. all that is needed is the hose held tight to the fill hole.. nothing "inserted" into the oil.

Can't fault the technique, as it works if done right.

Feedin’ horses mostly. We put up Timothy hay for sale and that supports our horses...well, almost break even! ‘Course some of that hay goes in the nest boxes for our chickens - both of ‘em! LOL! We’re down to just 2 layers right now.
