I unfortunately don't know how to relax with an empty glass! lol

Very common to see people eating with their dogs at their side too. But my God, don't try and ask for GRAVY!

I never had those experiences. I enjoyed their restaurants and bars. To get your glass full all you have to do is raise it and get their attention, no words needed. To get more food all you have to do is ask.

While we're on the subject of grandparents and cars, etc., Here's a picture of my maternal grandfather, on the left and his brother with their Harley's. Not sure when this was taken, but I would guess late teens or early 1920's.

Belt driven ??? Bet those would be worth a bundle right now.

I enjoyed the laid back atmosphere in bars and restaurants in Germany. They know how to relax. Eating a meal will take at least two hours. During the Summer on nice weather days they drag the tables and chairs out onto the sidewalk.

Different attitude towards things for sure... they often say Americans are always in too much of a hurry... it's the journey more than the destination.

Still remember hearing a American group complain about service and the waitress collected the menus saying McDonalds is down the street.

The locals showed me how it's done... relationships and drink money... that is what they do for just about any services... always a small tip or food item...

Feeding workers coming to your home is almost expected.

When I called for my final in Austria the head of the building department with chief inspectors show up... I was told I needed to have Bier, Bread and an assortment of coldcuts and some pastries for the road on hand..

I thought it was a joke but was informed otherwise...

Put out a nice spread with table cloth... had plans and permits laid out and process lasted about 3 hours... 45 minute tour/inspection and the rest really standing around chewing the fat.

The approved set of plans and all docs were designed and drawn by me... plus I did interior electric, etc...

It pays to get trusted advice as to how business is conducted locally

My first few visits to Germany I missed it all. I was the arrogant, in a hurry American. Then I got an opportunity to go over alone. I had no other distractions as in other Americans. I spent my afternoons and evenings in small restaurants/bars. Then I understood.

My ancestors are German. My Mom was raised in a dual language household here in America. She learned German first. My Mom would not let you visit her house without offering refreshments or a meal.

A similar pic. This is my Grandfather, Great Grandfather's Son, proudly displaying his team and fancy buggy. At the time my Great Grandfather bought his car, this type of team/buggy was the common form of transportation. What a transition to have lived with!!!! And where would my Great Grandfather get the knowledge to keep the ole Model T running?

It sounds like they realized that the customer is not an interruption of the work day but he is the reason for it!

Too many places act like you are interrupting their playtime when you walk in the door.

I have walked out of several places without buying anything simply because the employees never acknowledged that a customer had just walked in.

I would rate Chik-Fil-A at the very top for service, in any retail arena. They are really on the ball.
Publix for grocery stores.
Lowes was once good but have really declined.
Home Depot, good luck getting help.
The rest are a toss-up at best.

I've never been in a Chik-fil-a. I gotta get out more. :)

Chick-Fil-A is absolutely the best for service in our COVID crippled area.
They are drive through only, but come to your car in line with a tablet to take your order, swipe your card and keep you moving. The lines are long, but fast moving. Just don’t get hungry on Sunday.......

NAPCO 4x4 Pickup Trucks: The Forgotten 4x4

Wow wouldn't I love to have this truck, looks like 16" tires, old trucks and tractors seem to remind me of the good old days....
