Actually I did almost exactly that a few weeks ago, trying to get a 14" diam. or so log to catch on the infeed rollers. But one foot was on the ground. And I have two safety systems.

Certainly didn't feel right, but I assessed the safety concerns/risks.

They don't put warnings all over moving parts and equipment for fun. Over the years you see all sorts of stories that remind you of the danger. My wife does medical coding and had to code a child that was run over by a lawnmower by his grandfather.

Every neighborhood has that story. They also have the one where the guy working under the tractor loader gets squished, the guy working between the dump truck hoist and truck frame gets crushed, one guy in a truck tug of war gets decapitated by the chain......

You may be right. I'm always reading accident reports and I recall reading that. I can't find it now.

I hate running my chipper alone. Would much prefer for me to operate the machine and someone else feeding it, but feeding it is HARD work and even if I have someone helping me, I can't just stand there when there is heavy work to be done. And quite frankly, I don't trust anyone to run the infeed controls. Some people just get too freaked out when something goes wrong.

No pictures - unfortunately, true story. The local contractor who installed my septic system is dead. He did not stop at a rail road crossing. He was driving his big dump truck and pulling his backhoe on a lowboy trailer. The train hit and dragged the combined unit over a quarter mile before it could stop.

They say he did not stop because he was deaf. I often wonder about that ...........

Two weekends back I got the first chance to use my WC68 wood chipper with my 25hp Branson. It churned through cedar branches and trunks up to 4" with no problem. I had a 5" plus log I was saving for last to see if it would handle it. It pulled it into the cutter but bogged down and broke the shear pin. So there I was with the log stuck under the feed wheel, the pin broken and the engine off. I did not put my foot in it but did pry the hydraulic unit up to pull the log out. If someone had taken that picture it may had gotten the same reaction. My point is, pictures can be deceiving.
