Remember Astronaut Ice Cream (freeze dried)? Our local Mom & Pop Grocery found an ancient freezer full of Iceream that had been walled in and forgotten for 20 years or so. It was still plugged in but all of the ice cream was all dried out and fluffy.

If it's a self-defrosting freezer that might not be the case; it could just mean that all of your ice has been dehydrated. I know that happens when I keep ice cubes in the top part of my frig for a few months...
That also could be why my freezers don't use much energy; I won't buy one if it's self defrosting. It tends to shorten the life of your frozen goods.

I would have went without frost free but I hate defrosting. I cycle most all our food through the freezers so it is not in there that long, maybe a year. The frost free does use more energy, but I like the convenience. The defrost heating elements are not that hard to replace. Just my 2pennies.

It's not just the heating elements that go bad. It's also the evaporator fan motor, the defrost thermostat, the drain heater and the defrost timer (more likely this is an expensive circuit board on newer models).

Probably right but I should have mentioned that I HATE, HATE, HATE defrosting

Repeat, HATE defrosting. Did I mention what I think of defrosting :D:

For the price I am going to order for a non function air dryer...

Is it fool proof to order the kit based on stated HP or any problem with going to the next larger size kit?

That's why I built plywood bases with good castors on all of our freezers. When they need defrosting, we empty into a spare freezer, roll the needy one out in the driveway and hose it down inside, let the sun dry it out. It becomes the spare.

We have 6 chest freezer in the 7-9cuft range that we normally use. A 14 & 18cf upright we only use for quick freezing meat when we butcher pigs or a beef, then it gets distributed among the chest freezers, and the uprights cut off. The power consumption on the chest freezers varies from a bit under 1/2kwhr/day to about 3/4kwhr/day.....so I'm running 4-5 chest models for the same power use as your one upright.

You would probably use less power if you filled it with old milk jugs with water and let them freeze in your upright.

I will be finished running my 7 day straight with an empty freezer having found a place to tuck it out of the way. I will pick up 15 gallons of distilled water (which I use with coolant) and after freezing and stabilizing the temp for a few days rerun the 7 day test and see if it does use fewer Kwh's.

I bought that thermometer and had to do some shuffling to get it to work.

The fridge and deepfreeze are 12 foot apart but the monitor wouldn't receive both transmitters until I hung it on the wall 6 foot away from each of them.

Glad I bought it.

Which one did you buy?
