I guess the moral to the story is that even the experts screw up from time to time, and the first rule of safety in my book...treat every gun as if it were loaded and assume that wherever it is pointed, that it could discharge at any time...should never be forgotten.

I was thinking the same thing. Treat all firearms as if they are loaded at all times. Much safer that way.

Interesting topic. My dad raised me with strict gun safety rules, as he did with his grandchildren. When he passed last year he willed me his large collection with a list of who he wanted various guns to go to. As I distributed them it was nice to hear all of the stories that each recipient had associated with the weapon given. I still have a few to go while transfer requirements get met, and one that will not be transferred due to ineligibility.

If you invite someone to a fire range you better be able to give them a proper safety briefing on the range itself and the weapons being fired. Otherwise you got no business bringing someone to a range. You should also know a little about that persons mental capacity your inviting.

I have 20 plus years with many weapons from claymore mines to 155 Howitzers....seen all kinds of people come and go and had some scary situations. I also administered tests for many light and heavy military vehicles from the standard diesel pickup to the 10 ton hermit. While giving a live test in Germany had one guy take a corner in a deuce an a half. I told him many times, when cornering like that let go of the wheel enough for it to spring back instead of manualy returning it(no power steering). Had done it successfully on the parking lot but the first time on the road he ended up hitting a small car because he couldn't return the wheel fast enough. I blamed myself....I was the one on the German Polezi report not him. Always know your student and always plan ahead!

One huge advantage to the strict shooting lanes of the big indoor range where I trained the 600 over a period of 10 years was the fact the lane dividers had a big piece of steel inside them that separated the students from each other. and the confines of the lane made it difficult to turn around and shoot the instructor behind them. At least it gave the instructor time to stop their pivot if they attempted it. It is quite a bit safer than just an open air range. Not that I haven't shot hundreds of times at open air ranges (IPSC/USPSA) but that was with people that were a proven known quantity for the most part.
