I am looking at buying a mini to clear some land I have recently purchased I have it narrowed down to 2 machines the Kubota KX71-3 and the Deere 35G. Price is similar the Kubota has a thumb and the Deere has extra weights but no thumb. The Kubota is a 2009 (2 owner) and Deere a 2016 with no history. The hours are equal. My question is in a few years if I no longer need the machine which would have the better resale ?
Thank you

It really depends on the shape of the equipment. Ten years parked inside washed is not the same as ten years left outside dirty.

A thousand hours of abuse is not the same as a thousand hours gently used and cared for.

We once traded in a twenty five year or so old tractor that was always kept inside and cared for. Cleaner than you would find outside new on the lot. The dealer couldn't believe what he saw when he came to look at it.

you never said what the hours are on either.
if the 2016 is reasonable . looks decent.. mechanical is all good I would go for the newer.
Better controls, better hydraulics etc.

Which one appears to be the better value today? Condition being relatively equal that is probably the one which will be the better value in the future. Value on both will probably decline somewhat in the future so just buy the one which best fits your needs now. Both are well respected brands.

The hours are 2000 on each both look good from the pictures and videos both are over 8 hours from my location and was planning on shipping the cost are very comparable. It is just hard to pull the trigger on something you haven’t personally seen

Why would the number of hours on either machine really make any difference?
The OP states in his post that the hours on the two machines are "equal".

Can you hire someone to look at both machines for you?

I’m not sure I’ll do some looking in to that

For me.... If both had high hours I would go for the newer one. Newer excavators have better hydraulics and electronics. would guess the fuel usage would be better as well

Also consider some specific models have a reputation for durability and aging well and others an established reputation for being problematic. Ask around and also go to some of the other specific forums and look for a series of either positive or negative issues.

I wouldn't trust pictures and videos . I want to put my hands on it and see how it runs and visually look for leaks and damage. If not possible , then hire someone in the area to go inspect for you. Ask to see the maintenance records if they have them. You can tell if a machine has been taken care of by looking at it. Good Luck !

Construction equipment is largely considered an expendable tool with finite life. Older machines are going to be harder to find parts. Just reality.

With a car, age is important because the paint and style age. With a machine ,hours is all that matters. The downside to age might be that parts start to be hard to find.

Have to disagree, a bad operator can roast a clutch, bend cylinder rods and/or generally trash things in 100 hours while a good operator wont do that in 1000 hours.

I have to agree with Aaron,

Would say hours + overall condition both need to be part of the equation...

On an excavator, well maintained with high hours would win every time for me over low hours and poor condition.

neither will have a resale value, so just take the one that has the LEAST electronic and emission junk on it and figure you will own it till it gets junked then you wont be disappointed later on!
Personally---- I would go with the older stuff----just cause its newer dont mean you are getting parts for it!! been down that rabbit hole before! Age dont mean squat really.
Go operate both of them yourself to see IF you even want EITHER of them after trying them.
8 hour road trip could save you thousands later on. Dont take somebody elses word on anything.---check on it yourself then you know first hand.
