A few years ago my allergy nurse recommended natural peanut butter to me, and I've been enjoying it ever since. A year or two after that an older friend was giving away most of his tools has he felt he had gotten to unfit to use them, and he passed a pneumatic paint shaker along to me. Shortly after that I came home from the grocery store with a fresh jar of peanut butter and was about to start the somewhat arduous task of stirring in the oil when a revelation struck me: Why not use the paint shaker? So out into the garage I went, fired up the compressor, loaded the jar into the shaker, and fifteen minutes later, had the most perfectly mixed jar of all natural peanut butter ever.

A year or so later I was using the shaker as God intended, and somehow the can came loose. Man what a mess. I'd hate to see that happen to a jar of peanut butter... :laughing:

But think what a great PBJ sandwich you could make that way.

My wife had half a jar of peanut butter in the cabinet and less than half a jar of grape jelly in the refrigerator. Now she spreads peanut butter on one slice of bread, grape jelly on another slice, then puts them together. I just don't like those kind of sandwiches; I like the peanut butter and jelly thoroughly mixed then spread on the bread. So today, I dumped that half jar of jelly into the half jar of peanut butter and thoroughly mixed them, as described in this thread. Now each jar was half full, but the peanut butter jar was larger than the grape jelly jar, so the jar with the mix isn't full. So I think I'll just pour some honey in it and mix it again.

I read an article a while back that dealt with a cure for the deadly peanut allergy. Apparently, doctors had been working on it. Anyway, the "cure" involved eating peanuts in small doses and working your way up.

In other words, the peanut allergy developed because kids stopped eating them and the cure is to reverse course and begin again. Go figure.

Oh, on making a mess with a paint shaker? Try mixing peanut butter via the drill and dough hook method while on fast forward and lifting too high out of the jar before fully mixed. It's a mixed blessing because you're banned from the kitchen but that's where the beer is kept.

My daughter was diagnosed with a peanut allergy when she was a year old. We found out the hard way.

Allergist had us abstain for a couple of years, during which she had a couple of minor issues. Eventually they did some food challenges with her in micro doses. Shortly after, her tests all proved negative and she was allowed to eat it normally with proper supervision from us. Last night we enjoyed celery stalks with peanut butter for an after dinner snack - and she promptly licked all the peanut butter off without eating the celery.

Now that we've covered the bases with peanut butter, look at the label on your jelly or jam jar. A lot of it is not made with cane sugar but rather high fructose corn sweetener (HFCS) and corn syrup. There really isn't anything wrong with HFCS and it's taken a bad rap for claims of weight gain and diabetes issues. HFCS is cheaper than sugar so it's used everywhere, mostly in soda. Still, the switch to real sugar is accelerating and HFCS is falling out of favor in a big way.

I believe that jelly made with real sugar tastes better than the HFCS stuff. Maybe it's me or it could be that a maker who cares enough to pay extra for real sugar may care enough to do other little things that taste better. Not sure. But, try jam or jelly made with real sugar and use it with real peanut butter and I bet you will notice the difference.

You have to look a little harder to find real sugar jam or jelly. Costco carries it with big jars pretty cheap. Sam's Club doesn't seem to have it but WalMart does in the smaller and more expensive jars. Still, you could try a sample that way. Grape or strawberry goes best with PB&J sandwiches, probably because it's tackier and adheres better to the bread.

Uhh, quick note on mixing peanut butter this way. You always start with the dough hook turning in reverse or you will have peanut butter everywhere**. You can switch F-R once things get going but not from the start. Unfortunate, yet teachable moment to a friend of mine with a short attention span on directions.

I'm the OP on this and have an update worth noting. The Costco 100% peanut butter I use is smooth. No crunchy and I like crunchy. Now, you can buy Smucker's 100% PB that's crunchy but it's not always available.

So, we got some jars of dry roasted unsalted peanuts on sale and an extra two empty jars to handle the combined product overflow. We split the Costco creamy PB into three jars so we had space, got a plastic bag to smash the nuts in and a kitchen hammer. I smashed the nuts into pieces and added them to the plain PB. Actually starting the jar with crushed nuts first and then layering back and forth up to 3/4 full with smooth PB worked the best. Then, hit it with the electric drill to mix. We found the more added peanuts the better. Go crazy. Commercial crunchy PB is woefully lacking in added nuts and too much salt.

So, I now have crunchy PB to my specs, PB and strawberry sandwiches at my command and a smile on my face.



Note: when you crush the peanuts, put in a big zip-lock bag and whack away. Do it without the contained bag and 98% will be on the floor and 2% somewhere else. You don't have to zip the bag shut and start with smaller amounts.

My wife eats quite a lot of peanut butter and I eat very little. But neither of us want the crunchy. But for those who prefer the crunchy, that sounds like you have a good way to go.

Bird-- Let me tell you that the best smooth peanut butter we ever had is from Costco. Sells as a 2 pack and great price. If not a member, find a friend. I think but not positive that the two jar pack costs around $9. And they're good size jars.
