Yeah. I'd go to his county offices, pull the records of every well in the past 20 years in his area, take an average, wave some frankincense around and call it magic. ;)

Pretty much every well driller in an area can tell you how deep your well is gonna be and how much water it's gonna produce based on past experience with the area.

Yep... He told me all of that as well. Hit water at such and such feet, go down to x amount of feet for the best water and then sink well to 300 ft for a reservoir ... It's just a matter of faith...

The way my house site was at the time of well drilling, there was literally only one spot they could get the drill rig to so that was it.
The neighbors downslope from us including my folks all had drilled wells at depths from 252' for my parents to a 25' deep artesian well that overflowed at the neighbor lowest down.
It was a good bet I would hit water as my elevation near the same as my folks.
Any way we hit water at 205 and a well driller friend got me the drilling log from back in the 70's that showed who owned the land, how deep etc.
A dowser would have found water probably anywhere around here and how deep if he looked at the local log first.

I know nothing about dowsing for water wells, but I can tell you that as a general contractor I have located water lines many many times with my 2 welding rods. That includes plastic irrigation lines. Now it does not work for everybody but it does work for me. I can hit the centerline within 1’ to 2’ 90% of the time.

Call it magic if you want, but I know it works for me.

It's been proven to be no more accurate than the laws of chance.

It would be interesting to see the two of you get together.

I'd buy him a beverage and tease him about dowsing. ;)

When I was a kid my parents moved into a brand new house and had trouble with the well drying up periodically. My dad had a local guy come out and witch for water. He walked our property and told us our well was about 50’ from a vein of water running through our property diagonally. He dug a hole about 12’ deep with a backhoe and dropped in some pea stone and 3’ diameter crocks, and we had a well in one afternoon. It was in a vein of sandy soil that lay just below the topsoil and the water ran crystal clear. In the spring the water would be up to about a foot from the top of the crocks. In the summer it would drop to about 3’ below the ground level. That well is still going 40 years later and has never failed a water quality test. So I don’t know how it works, but I watched a guy witch for water once and do it quite accurately.

At the dowsers convention years ago in Vermont these old dowsers were there and we would see the dowsing rod bend...then they'd say 300, 200, 100 ft then 150,140,etc. Then gallons per minute, etc.
Finished they'd say 120 ft. down , 12gpm...right here. There was well drilling equipment there to verify.
It is strange, but so is prayer.
