New "tier 4" diesel tractors under 25hp have looser emissions requirements than above 25. Those tractors like the L2501 can meet those requirements using old fashioned mechanical fuel injection. Most tractors above 25hp use EFI along with a DOC+DPF or DOC to capture and burn soot. Branson's figured out how to keep their mechanical injection and combine that with a DOC+DPF. They use a passive regen process which works fine as long as you work the tractor periodically. The newest ones add a manual regen feature. On mine (without manual regen) the only computer is a data logger, and the tractor runs fine with it unplugged.

And to complement the excellent post by Eric, here is a good read about these Kukje engines used on Bransons:

That is great information! Thank you!

I don't believe this to be exactly true. The under 25hp can meet the required emissions standards by virtue of the fact that they use less lbs mass of fuel to make 25hp and therefore don't need exhaust after treatment. The requirements are not looser.

This can be seen in the high horsepower diesels. These can have a DOC with DEF as well as DPF on the end for final soot cleanup. From what I've seen, most have gotten away from EGR but some still employ that as well.

Basically, more fuel in, more bad stuff out!

They are looser. It's on a per HP basis. Here's a handy chart:
