Ok I'm sure Krpan winches are a good winch but a big turn off for me is this two rope engagement design, I dont see the need unless you in the stand back 50' club, for me, I want hands on right next to tractor with ONE rope or button.... And whats with a screen 10' up in the air, the screen needs to be wider not higher.....

IMO Fransgard winch is a far better more simple winch design, the only issue with Fransgaurd is cable change, but with simple mod that can be made real easy. On plus side I did like the way grease was applied to Krpan winch chain. Now the two speed gear redution, if that can be in or out thats good but if it's a fixed slower winch line speed thats bad, then theres the 200+ feet of cable, only needed in a swamp or mountain, as of 14 years and counting I have yet to need over 100' of cable, 3004 Fransgaurd winch comes with 130' of cable.

Side note if the sale's woman had a english accent I might like the Krpan winch better........... Fransgaud man stand..........

I've had a Fransgard and Farmi, which both were mechanical like yours. Now I have a Uniforest with the two rope system. This type winch has a friction brake similar to a skidder. I wouldn't say that either way is better; just different. All three of my winches pulled trees in when I wanted them too, which is all that I care about.

I really liked the 230 foot cable on my winch when I got it; we'd had lots of snow and rather than plowing my trails I was able to drag trees down them. Then after about a month I had the rat's nest which others mention and had to make (2) 100 foot lengths and (1) 30 foot rat's nest. I was going to replace it but was shocked at the price of cable. At any rate unless dragging down an existing trail, if I go out much more than 100 feet I spend more time running out and resetting chokers after the tree hangs up yet again...

When doing pulls longer than about 100-150 feet, I find I need to work with a helper/spotter. I just cant see enough of what is going on between the hills, trees, stumps, doglegs in the pull (if I'm using a self-releasing snatch block). If I'm pulling down an existing trail where I can see, I'm more likely to just back right up to the log, if at all possible, rather than make a long pull.

I agree in principle. However, the first year I had the winch we had a lot of snow. I was pushing down my trails as far as I could then dragging cable the rest of the way, crawling up over the snow bank to do so. That's when the long control ropes were handy, otherwise I'd have been standing between the tractor and a waist high snow bank... not conducive to safety. (I was also digging down with a shovel to fell the trees, then limbing on snow shoes.)

I can see that those conditions would make sense for a long pull with the cable. I tend not to work when the snow is that deep (one of the perks of not doing this for a living: If conditions are too nasty, I just put it off for another day.) I enjoy snowshoeing, but limbing on snowshoes is not something I would want to do by choice: maybe to dig out after a storm if I had to get somewhere.

I drug a log out of the woods once with a chain about 25-30 ft long! Nice huh?

I bet you walked right up to it in your regular boots too, no shoveling needed, no heavy coat, no long johns. The silver lining up here is, guaranteed no snakes from about October to March....

I agree it is much better to be able to see. But it is hard to see around corners when using a snatch block. A lot depends on common sense and what you are working on and to me it is way to limiting if you insist on being able to see the entire pull. Reading the cable tells a lot. I found this from 7 years ago where I was clearing a 1/4 acre slot to maintain a view that required some long blind pulls. Most longer than in the video but there were no keep trees I needed to protect.

No snakes here from about October to March either, and I have a couple pair of snake proof boots, and a couple sets of snake proof gaiters if I want for when they are out. Snakes are no big deal to me anyway.

And snakes are not a big deal?

I don稚 have even one pair of gaiters or snake proof boots.
