So setting up a 50 gal transfer tank from a old f700 ford truck. Wanting to keep this project on the cheaper side, I'll be using it to fill a couple 150+hp allis chalmers tractors and a gleaner combine. I have been using a bunch of jerry cans(crazy I know) and want something easier. Will I regret getting a hand pump vs a electric? I could see issues keeping the nozzle in the combine which is up top while pumping down in the pickup.
And If I do go with a hand pump, is the piston or rotary better? looking into fillrite since they seem to be made good and last.

I'm in canada and the hand pumps with hose and nozzle are around $250 cad. The 12v looks to be around $450 cad at the cheapest.. Although I did find a RD812 smaller one for under $400.
Just looking for suggestions, thanks

I use an $18 (USD) 12v submersible diesel pump, and some clear 3/4" tubing to pump up my stuff. Been using it for 3 years. Pumps about 10 gpm and has a toggle on/off switch. I use it to pump out of a 275 gal storage tank. Several on ebay to choose from.

With only 50 gal to pump, I wonder if you're not doing a little "overkill" with the nozzle and 110v elec pump.
Just my 2「.

I gave up with hand pumps, non auto shut off nozzles, and cheap electric pumps. I have used a FillRite 12v pump with an auto shut off nozzle for the past 10 years or so.
They're not cheap, but it works when I need it, plus I don't spill diesel by overfilling.

I do have a rotary vane hand pump I use for my "strategic reserve" fuel. Made by GPI, 13 or so revolutions per gallon. I wouldn't want to use it daily, or for more than a few gallons at a time though.

I discovered a nice VERY reasonably priced pump on the net.

It basically is a marine bilge pump c/w filter screen, 12 or 24 volts wired with switch and battery clamps.
Not super fast but very acceptable flow.
Best yet is price, as it is in the $10.00 (US) range.
Being submerged it is a big NO-NO for gas.
One TBN'r also found one on Google Prime as well.

They are so compact that they fit in the filler necks of most fuel containers.
Another nice feature is they self drain back to the fuel tote thus no smelly spillage.

I just ordered a 12V pump for diesel, on E-Bay, that will fit through a standard size barrel bung...pump hooked to hose drops into the tank.
It cost me $15 USD, and has good reviews.
I believe that these (11 gpm?) 1-1/2" (?) diameter pumps are also sold by Princess Auto in Canada, and may be even cheaper there.
Made in China, of course!

I buy the GPI 15GPM/minute electric. I have one mounted to a 100 gallon on one truck and another mounted to a 50g cube on another truck. I think they are $299 at Tractor supply. I get about 5 years out of them, but they are used a LOT. I kept the box and receipt for the last one I bought and it’s getting returned if it’s gives me any issues.

I like Fill-Rite pumps, I have had very good luck with them.........

yes and no, I may end up with a 100 gal tank down the road. And a good pump can usually be resold for a fair bit if I need to. Not sure if you've ever filled up combines with the fuel tanks up top but it's a pain. Will be 12v pump not 110.
I will look into that, I really wanted to keep this project cheap and the pump part is the most expensive since I got the tank for free. I guess I'm just skeptical of the cheaper pumps, I just want something that's going to work when I need it

Yes they are better than GPIs

I prefer Fill-Rite pumps, I spent a lot of money on GPI pumps and finally replaced it with a Fill-Rite.

Also, since you'll be filling tanks "away" from your pump, you'll need to be able to shut it off at the nozzle. I have a 36 gal aux tank in my truck I pump out of and can't see how a manual pump would work very well.

The electric pumps have a limited time they can be deadheaded. Don't remember the time, but enough to stop the flow and shut off the pump

Im usually so aggravated to replace a pump, I cheap-out and buy GPI.
The fill rites are always quite a bit more, but last longer. From April to December, I bet I use mine almost every day.
Will probably make the switch next time. The GPIs are kinda cool being made out of aluminum-no paint and no rust.

Not sure what pressure the pump makes, but what if you put a switch like this teed after the pump controlling a relay that disables the pump?
https://www.amazon.com/LEFOO-Extended-Pressure-Switch-20psi±3psi/dp/B00GBVN65S/
Then it would automatically shut off the pump if your pressure got too high (such as when auto shut off nozzle closes).

I use 3 ea. 55 gallon drums in a trailer that I park under a shed covering. I bought the cheapest 12v pump TSC sold, and the delivery nozzle so that I could manually shut off flow when desired at the tank...pump has a pressure relief valve that relieves the pressure that develops when the pump is running and you shut off flow. I use old engine batteries that still work for low current applications but can't start an engine. While at TSC I bought the Gold brand output filter and installed it prior to the delivery hose. When the tanks are empty, I hook the trailer to the truck and go to town and fill her up. Have had zero problems with this setup. It was no way near the price you are quoting.

I would love a military “ Buffalo “ fuel trailer that could be towed and has all the electric pump, hose, etc. I have my haz mat, so I can tow it under my license, but unsure if they are allowed for civilian use?
I could fill up 300+ gallons of red diesel, then park it where I want.
Wonder if those go cheap at auction?

Another vote here for Fil-Rite pump. The advantage for me has been the almost total elimination of fuel spillage, the ability to control flow at the tractor fuel tank, and a lot less physical exertion than the 5 gallon cans that I used to use.
Mine is small enough to load on a trailer when it needs refilling, and is powered by a 12 v pigtail off the tractor.
