Heating that up before welding might help too .
Your probably right so this time I set them on the stove first before rewelding and back on after welding.

Hi carbon steels will nearly always break at the transition or junction. That's where the weld filler merges with the steel. The only way I've ever got high-strength steels (hi carbon) to join is to anneal it. And that's up to cherry red not just laying it on a stove. :confused3:

Nobody warned you about welding leaf springs? Doesn't work except in artsy fartsy stuff. As a possible solution, pockets that the springs fit into, grind notches into the edges for locking bolts.

Inner pass/multi pass welding on high Carbon steel isn't suppose to go over 350* and preheat is suppose to be 125-200*, at least thats how it is at BIW shipyard.

Leave springs will work on some structure, I've used it on making stove grates, snowplow cutting edges and have made small tractor forks before, just it take more then one weld pass.

Oldpath,
Last time I tried to guess what numbers meant in a welding thread I mistook PSI for dollars so this time I'll ask flat out. What do 350* and 125-200* refer to? I don't understand the asterisk.

I pretty sure problem is in yer audio sequence.

clink clunk clank ting tong ping pong

Sposta be Tink ping clang follow by sumnavbeach from behind steering wheel. Some times Tink Tang walla walla bing BANG.

Still be busted, but sound track right.

Spring stock pretty close to tool steel, will take lot of abuse. Won't take much in terms of leverage stress tho. Pretty much best you weld to carbon steel wid 309ss. L O T O F C O O O O L down time.
