Pulling Vehicles out of a Ditch in the Snow

I think I would size the people up. Also the vehicle. You can afford a luxury car, you can afford a commercial tow. So many variables to consider.

That is a very true statement.

Many years ago some friends and I were in the mountains hunting. It started to snow fairly heavy so we started working our way out. Along the way we come across a small run down car in the bottom of a dry ravine the road ran through. The driver comes over, tells me I have to pull him out in a very smart aleck way. I asked why I have too. He proclaims I can't get around him so I have to pull him out. I just put my pickup in gear and drove around him, no big deal. Now he is running behind me, waving his arms and yelling for me. I stop, he asks politely if I would pull him out. I said yes but not it's gonna cost ya. How much. $20. He says I should pull him to the highway for that, I said, 200 bucks, wanna keep negotiating? He fishes around in his pockets and comes up with $20. So I pulled him out of the ravine and up a hill that I was sure he couldn't make on his own. At the top I get out, take my strap off while he is standing there. I then reach in my pocket, pull out the $20 and hand it to him. I told him, from the looks of his car he really can't afford to be a smart ***** so keep that in mind the next time he needs help.

We drive on for a few miles and find a fairly new pickup with the two off side tires over the edge of the road. The road is cut through a side hill, not real steep side hill but steep enough. I drive up to the pickup, positioning my pickup to pull him out but apparently he doesn't realize that. He comes right to my door as if trying to keep me from getting out. Says, you have to pull me out. My response, why? Him, cause you can't get around me. So I push him out of the way with my door so I can evaluate the situation. After a few moments I hollered at the guys with me, come on up. As they gathered around I told them this guy has issued a challenge, he said we can't get around without pulling him out and I think you guys are tough enough that we can just push the pickup over the side so we can drive on by. The guy changed his tune, asked if I would pull him out. I said, no problem but now it's gonna cost ya. Him, how much. Me, $50. He started cussing and carrying on so I told him the price is going up in seconds. He pulls out his wallet, which is filled with bills, hands me $50. I pulled him out pretty easily. As I am gathering up my strap he speeds away, no thanks at all.

While all this is going on the car catches up to us. The driver has been watching all this. As I am gathering up my strap the driver asks why I didn't give him back his $50? I said, look at his pickup, fairly new and fancied up, look at how he is dressed, he isn't hunting, he is showing off. That all shows he can afford to be a smart ***** so I don't mind having some of that money.

It's called, know your client.

I never accept money (in the end) and give people free gas, or have in the past.

I once stopped to help a lady who had slid off the road, and dismounted her tire. Suddenly the whole situation seemed to rest on my shoulders!

I think there are FEW people nowadays that wouldn't make you responsible for damaging their car. They wanted a pull, not damage to their vehilcle. No good deed ever goes unpunished. lol

Like your signature line but the only cure for that job killer is permanent removal but then we'd get Tamale so I'll stick with Biden for now...

Made myself 100 bucks today on 2 idiots. plowed out the drives and rentals and I'll take my wife to dinner with the hundred. I find people amazing. Just cannot understand that a 4 wd don't mean squat when the ditch is looming and they jam on the brakes and in they go.

Why I ALWAYS have them attach the snatch strap. Not me and if they don't want to. I leave them there but I give them my buddy's number, he has a wrecker service uptown. Did that to a gal in a skirt once. Was fun to watch....

All these people are just Puppets.

Did she find a suitable brake flex line or CV shaft?

I will never forget the day many years ago, I hacked the brake lines off the front of my car in a snow storm with a spade. Then shovelled the driveway between car and garage (by hand) got in to move the car ahead and proceeded to drive through the garage door.

I've been on the other side of the coin... in the early '80s I visited a state park and pulled my 2WD truck off the road to make sure it wouldn't be in the way... not realizing there was a deep ditch which they had winged over and filled with snow. Instead of skiing I spent the afternoon shoveling with no luck. After a few hours a young couple came along in a Cherokee (or whatever they were called back then) and easily got me back onto the road. I gave them a 10 or a 20, whichever was in my pocket. They thanked me and said that they hadn't been sure if they had gas enough to get back home.

Wrong!
Determine that he's not a lawyer first and go from there.

You might pull from the front and you could be sued for the rear plus a new transmission and paint job.

Meh....Sometimes a nice car (or house, clothes, etc...) represents the money they HAD, not the money they HAVE.
In farm country, looks can be very deceiving.

"In farm country, looks can be very deceiving."

Oh yes!

Back a ways when I was a sales rep for fork lift trucks in walked a real farmer.
Boots, bib coveralls, the works!
Everybody shunned him.

I, always the curious one, asked him if I could be of assistance.
He was a tobacco farmer and I knew what their preferred fork lift was so steered him to our demo.
He calmly said. YEP, that's what I want.

Opened up his brief case and he had enough cash to close the deal.

The bummer was we had assigned territories on commission and I did not get one cent.
(some reps would split but lucky me that rep did not)
