Vic how do you rate the cut quality of the hammers on the LP to the cut quality of the Y knives on the old NH 918H?

I"m not quite sure how to answer your question since the answer will be dependent on the type of material mowed and the quality of cut desired. Are you mowing residential lawn grass, tall grass and weeds, brush or other? I was able to achieve very satisfactory cut quality on residential lawns with the NH 918H, something other forum members here have reported they were unable to do. Why the difference in results? I have no idea. The NH 918H also performed well cutting pasture grass up to 3' or 4' and some light brush. As previously mentioned the LP FM25 with Y blades used on residential lawns gave a "sawtooth" finished apperance, which was not acceptable to me. I am unable to directly compare the quality of cut using the LP FM25 with hammer blades on residential lawns as the property I now mow is situated on former farm pasture land and is much rougher and uneven than the city property mowed with the NH 918H. My impression based limited mowing some of the smoother lawn areas is that the cut quality with the FM25 with hammer blades is fairly similar to the NH 918H. On pasture grass both mowers produced equally good results with no preference either way. On pasture land overgrown with light brush the clear choice is the FM25 with hammer blades. The hammer blades produced a cleaner cut on some of the larger saplings than the Y blades. Vic

I am looking at buying a Land Pride FM25 7' wide for my Kubota M4. I mow 40 acre pasture of grass and weed only and up to 3' high. No woody brush. I am mainly knocking down weeds left after grazing or cutting close in preparation for plow/discing for renovation areas to be replanted. I am not mowing lawns. Which blades should I get? Dealer is recommending the heavy duty y blades. They are not included in the base price (the blades add as much $ as the total cost of Italian and Chinese mowers complete).

I considered Virismo and rears but they are quite a bit more expensive. I have been using a Betsco with just fine results for the past 9 years, but I know have a bigger tractor and want to step up my game a little.

So any thoughts on the Land Pride vs others for my needs...and best bet on blade choice?

Y blades should work well for your mowing. Can't help with the LP vs others question. My only flail experience is with LP and NH.

Thank for the input. I had taking LP off my list as it was a more expensive version of the rebranded Italian mowers. But I learned here, the newer FM25 are made in the US. That helps justify the price.
My quote is $5500 for the FM25-84" plus $2200 for the Heavy Y blades. I guess no blades included in base price.

Hello HarleyBob,

Look at the Maschio line of Orchard and Vineyard crop shredder flail mowers before you open your check book.

I will still take a look at the better Italian brands. I am just deciding to rule out the chinese models. I have several chinese mowers, they have been fine, but there are weak points here in there. Almost all the bolts rust up immediately. No gear boxes have given out (9 years on two mowers used fairly hard). The original belts where very very short lived (althought that could have been adjustment/alignment issues). I have Italian tiller...pretty much bullet proof.
The paint disappears quicker and rust appears earlier. However, sometimes only the chinese options are the right size and features. I needed a finish mower that was switchable from front to rear discharge and was only 4' wide. The only one I could buy was from china. Has worked great.

I have other equipment from Rears that is 30 years old and still has a lifetime left. Their support is perfect. Parts forever. The person who answers your call is named Rears. However, they are backordered at least three months and I need mower before that. Not really priced more than the other US makers. I am not mowing orchard anymore, otherwise I would wait for the Rears. That is where they really shine.

Why do you say that? What is a good alternative? (Rears is too backordered for me). Sounds like Maschio and the other better Italian models are a good option....I just thought I would be a good American and get a US made mower.
The quote I got for a Land Pride was from the Kubota dealer. You probably knew that.
