I would hope you know the difference, but diesels come in various "clothes"...there's common rail, or direct inject...my "old" '02 6000 Mahindra is direct inject (air is heated before starting) and starts on just about first rotation every time (even when temps in the 20's F around here)...meanwhile, my 22 year old 7.3L International engine in my F350 may make quite a few rotations before it starts if it hasn't been started in a few days...(only has about 129K miles on it so I expect to get only about another 200K out of it...)...and then there's the old 2 stroke Detroit Diesels....so which do you have? I have a block heater and use it but there are other considerations. This winter was extremely cold and I had some days where I couldn't use the tractor as the shuttle shift wouldn't switch and a few days where the tractor did not want to start. Somedays it is better just to leave the tractor alone. If you must run it any given day I'd get the heater and I'd also keep it inside. The shed I have access to has sliding doors so I have to keep my tractor outside in the winter as the doors freeze shut in the ice. BobG_in_VA nailed it. My tractor will either start right away or not at all and my F350 will turn and turn and finally start. Also in really cold weather it helps to keep a battery maintainer plugged in. I didn't do it this year but changing oil viscocities for extreme weather is another way you can ease the starting on them. I plan on doing that this year. Other considerations are it takes the transmissions and hydraulic systems quite a bit of time in extreme cold to get warmed up. Good luck! I'd vote for adding the heater plug.

I have one on my 2555, I live in orange county NY, i have started it w/o block heater in the single digits and with it. it definitely starts easier and warms up faster with block heater so i generally throw it on regardless when it gets below freezing and i know i am going to use it. to me it means less wear and tear on the engine if it warms up faster.

There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to NOT have a block-heater. Just cause it WILL start doesn't mean it's good for it.

"0" weight oil is a good idea too. Maybe even more important than a block heater...
