Who quit their desk job for their dream job?

I am fortunate in that my dream job was my first real adult job. Hired by a metropolitan Fire Dept at 21, did my 30 and retired at 51 years old.

It's true if your work is doing what you enjoy, it's really not work. I've been retired 7 years but I was self employed, started in business with $145! Growing up, grandparents were next door and I remembered Grandad saying he was riding the train to Scranton (100 years ago) one day sitting with an old fellow who said "always work for yourself, even if it's selling pencils on the street corner. If you're worth $2 an hour to someone else you're worth $4 an hour to yourself."
I'd hate a desk job. People were made to move, lift heavy things, walk!

I'd suggest that if the commute is only varying 5 seconds that you need more dogs. :)

I am wondering how long that hallway is if (without dogs) it takes 1 minute to walk

Unless the coffee pot is in the hallway :D

EDIT: I did not understand there was a petting toll booth on the 1 min 5 seconds commute. I have a sneaking suspicion there is some petting going on in the 1 minute commute :D

Science and mechanics plagued my professional career. [-) Aviation, physics & astronomy, high vacuum high voltage, light and matter..

This evening, I was standing at the summit of the mountain in a heavy snow fall chatting with colleagues before the final sweep of the ski trails. "I wish I knew it was going to be so much fun, I would have started earlier"

Positively exhilarating. And they pay me to do it.
Rescue patrol ... Has it's perks

That used to be the case with private jobs as well but that has changed over the years with government workers getting pensions plus higher salaries. Private sector has killed pensions off with employees going at it alone. Government workers get their pensions propped up by those without pensions, go figure. When government workers salaries were less than private sector it was understandable, but that has changed. Most government workers i deal with get paid more than my company pays for an equivalent position (I know this from public information data). I lose employees because I cannot meet public offers. Something is very wrong here.

One of the jobs I really enjoyed was lifeguarding. I worked at a public beach on a calm little lake, public swimming pools, and a few years at a man-made whitewater course here in South Bend. Pools are BORING! Except more people drown in pools. It's really hard to pick out a drowning person in a crowded pool, let alone see them lying on the bottom.

The beach was pleasant. Wildlife, nice gently slope from zero to deep water. No drop offs. 3' line to tell little kids not to go past.

Whitewater course was exhilarating! Moving water can kill you quick. Learned a lot of rope work there. I think my Swiss seat was too tight!

^^^ I would never have panned out as a lifeguard when I was young. Too many girls to distract me.

Moss did you forget to mention the girls?

Edit: I wasn't fast enough. :)

Buddies wife just retired from VA, nurse. She loved the old guys but hated the job..... so to speak. Knowing nurses can get a job anywhere I asked, why not work for a local hospital etc etc etc.

That's when I learned that not only do they get far far better bennies but she got 30% more in salary. And vets are dying waiting in line. Phoenix, Fayetteville and who knows where else.

That horse has left the stable. 90% of my ex in-laws were govt. employees and it went on for at least 3 generations. It was like a family business. Imho, the government is the worst employer out there, unless you nailed down one of those cushy jobs. I don't blame people for picking low hanging fruit, that's just being human but, i don't have to respect them.

Seems like a lot of folks trade security for almost anything just to avoid problems and confrontation. Those are the same folks trying to get us vaccinated.

Problem avoiders go to work for the govt so let's let them solve all our problems.....just don't forget that $1400 check!
