Insight on buying a mini excavator vs renting

/ Insight on buying a mini excavator vs renting #231
I own a 6,000 lb mini "NH E27B" and a NH Boomer 41 with loader. I wouldn't want to be without either machine. The mini has put some money in my pocket also. If you have a few acres and do projects around the place, then it's fantastic. IF you want to spend the money. I bought a used machine in good shape, then traded that one on a new one..exact same model just new. With good care and lower hours, if and when I sell it, I won't lose a dime. At least not in my mind. Once you own a mini-excavator with a hyd thumb, you won't want to be without. DSCF3018.JPG

I really have to disagree with all this. A MiniX is miles faster than a BH at virtually everything other than ground speed. I have both and the BH has not been used much since getting the Mini. .

How many trips (disregard the obvious speed difference) do you need to make with a mini-ex to move one yard of excavated material 300 feet?

Probably 3 at 2 mph where my backhoe could do it in one at as fast as conditions allow.

You can get a high cap scoop bucket on a mini and load trucks in 1/2 way decent time, but a backhoe has the material scooping, pushing, lifting won easily. You can also get flip down forks and sorts of other attachments to move other materials. My Case Super M had a loader mounted 8' wide landscape rake available!

If you’re scooping straight out of a bank and dumping on a truck an excavator will beat anything. A loader doesn’t usually have the strength to scoop hard pack dirt and the cycle time is a lot slower. IMG_8876.JPGIMG_8875.JPG

One of the biggest reasons I want to buy is because of this. I will spend a weekend installing the tank....A weekend installing the line to the leach field....Another few days doing the field itself (the system will remain usable with the old one for most of this time). I have no doubt I can rush it and rent. And maybe that is smarter. But I am feeling like buying for the right price might be a worthwhile trade.

You should just be sure this machine has a thumb on it. Otherwise, what are you waiting for?
