Do yourself a big favor and buy a modern ish tractor with a HST trans and a loader. It would be safer and far more useful.

4wd gives you front wheel braking and traction. Really important if you have significant slopes.

I have always thought the 8N is a great first tractor! If you learn how to get work out of it and how to work on it you will be miles ahead of the game with a modern tractor. It will teach you to pay attention as you learn it's limits. Things like anticipating stops will go a long way. I hardly ever need my brakes because I started on a 8N at 6 years old.

I agree an N makes a great first tractor.

Just a few thoughts, no special order.....

The tractor in the OP is a 2N or 9N, not an 8
I used a 2N around here for 20+ years as my only and later as a back up tractor.
Tires on it when I got it were weather checked & OLD.
Same tires are still on it and it lives outside.
My 2N (pretty much the same as a 9N) has running boards & I like them.
As already mentioned, 8N has 4 speed & 2 or 9 have a 3 speed.
No power steering but with a minimal amount of grease it steers just fine.
Mine is used for maintaining my road & drive(6' back blade & 6' York rake), finish mowing (6'), brush hogging(5'), boom poll for picking up stuff, working my woods for firewood & harvesting timber, chipping brush & pretty much anything I can think of around here.
I DO have a newer 4x4 about the same size as the N and it also is used for everything.
It REALLY is nice having a backup tractor when one goes down.
For the price of a cheap riding lawnmower you have very capable machine that will last MUCH longer then that mower.

Get a N if you can find one but I wouldn't pay more ten $2k or $2500 with implements.
Use it to learn on and figure out what you need and/or want in the future.

I converted mine to 12V and am glad I did.

If he gets something without a fel and needs to move stuff he can get or build three point forks pretty cheap, or as previously stated a boom pole for even cheaper, I'm unsure of three pt lift cap on the n series though.

I am not throwing any of this info away. Its just a lot to take in. and some good stuff. All I ask is if the 9Ns are not good please explain why and pretty much all of you have given me reasons to continue my search and research.

1. I have no idea on tractor model numbers so I have no idea where to start. For now I'm going to check more into that 2110 that Airbiscuit shared.

1a. if there is a method to the madness of tractor model numbering please let me know but after learning the origins of 9N 2N and 8N. yeah Im expecting no method! LOL.

2. All things being equal I would love to have a FEL but Im just not sure we can get it in the budget.

3. I would like to for sure use this in the winter for plowing or whatever so more traction would be nice.

4. I may have 60 VERY FLAT acres but like i posted earlier most is woods with ATV trails and there are only a few acres we want to "recultivate". Please keep it coming Im not fully locked in to the N series and the slightly newer fords have me interested.

If I am going with an N im going to try and hunt down a 8N

I already have a 3 point forks found on the property. The PO had a N series tractor so it should be good to go. Also have some sort of moldboard two wheeled plow, a 10ft wide disc harrow and one of those old spike style drag frames. Not sure on name of that one still new to this.

A 9n is geared too high with the 3 speed for what you want to do.

The FEL can be somewhat replaced with using a pond/dirt scoop on the 3 point. It makes a good carry all also.

I have had 2n,9n,8n, and now a 64 Ford 2000. It is so much better but sets months at a time as I use my Kubota L3301.

The 9n/2n is better than doing things by hand and foot but it has been improved upon so much that they are really not the workhorse you appear you will need and another would suit you better.

You can buy a lot of tractor that would serve you better for 4K.
That FEL is nice but farmers and landowners have made do without for a lot of years.

Those implements you found on the place will probably fit other tractors. The n series used the Ferguson 3 point system that became the standard so most implements can be used interchangeably.

Look for
Massey Ferguson 35/135. Used all over the world.
Ford 600 series
John Deere but that green paint tends to be expensive.

Live PTO and at least 4 speeds or a Sherman underdrive would be a minimum requirement.

Diesel will sip fuel and will run forever. But cost more. And if they break, usually expensive.
Gas would be better for first timer.

My 2 cents.
