Single hose on single acting cylinder - how do I get it to return?

By gravity if vertical or with a return spring, however to do so a provision needs to be made for the oil to be allowed to return to the reservoir.
A simple selector valve in the single hose that diverts to reservoir will accomplish that.

If that is the only way I understand. Just hoping there was a trick. I already have a line plumbed back to the filter - will hook up to it with a manual relief valve.

I plumbed in a ball valve to return the pressure in the single line to return to my return line that go straight into the hydraulic filter. The pressure in the filter was enough to actually cause the dump bed to slowly raise - so that won't work. Yesterday, I was using the left remote and the bed would not lower, after doing all of this - I connected it to the right remote and the bed lowers when I pull the lever back. Just FYI.

LH barrel on RH scv on my 4255 operates a single acting cylinder just fine.

The top ports on any of my 3 SCVs will operate a single action cylinder. May be different but I'm sure nothing needs to be plumbed. We have used single acting cylinders for years on the farm.

It makes a big difference which rear remote you connect a single acting cylinder to.

Many SCV ports have load check valves in them to keep a cylinder from creeping down.

This load check may keep a cylinder from lowering by gravity

Owners' manual if read carefully usually spells out the one to use for single acting.

Any of my 3 work on them.

Which model 30-55 series JD tractor hyd's are you referring to? If you're referring to a newer than '92 JD tractor then your tractors hyd's are significantly different than older models. I can start my 4255 then disconnect batteries & alternator then operate(drive) my tractor. I think that's not going to happen with battery disconnected on a much newer model than mine.

I agree. I was speaking of my new 5090. But my 2002 model 5310 was exactly the same. Any one of the three SCVs would operate my single acting cylinders. My FM has 3 of them so all 3 remotes have to work.

Your 5310 & 5090 both have open-center hyd's which operate a lot different than JD tractors with closed-center hyd's such as the 4440 which this thread was originated about.
