Very sad state of affairs when a decent percentage of Americans think their food comes from the supermarket.
You can thank creative advertising for that. Most urban dwellers don't have a clue about a lot of things today, food included. When you live in an enclave with piped in water, natural gas piped in and sewer piped out what is there to worry about anyway?

All good until it isn't. Sort of like Texas. Glad I'm a country bumpkin. We raise our own beef, grown our own vegetables and have no neighbors and it's all good with me.

1000 gallons of fuel is a months supply for me in May-October. Smaller farmers, truckers, etc. feel it less than larger. The 200HP tractor in my avatar can use its 100 gallon tank in one long day.
One week of running the discbine could consume 400+ gallons. Now add the smaller tractors and trucks.
I used ~ $14,000 #2 last year. I know guys that use $150,000.

Guess mine are more miserly then. 1000 gallons is a season for me. I will be NOT idling them this year to keep the cabs cool however.

That may change, I just picked up some more hay ground. Will see how it plays out, every year is different.

I see we both reside in the Bananna Republik. Isn't it comforting?

Miserly, yeah maybe. I think its more number of tons produced? I made ~1000 tons of hay in 4x5 and 4x4x8, and cut about a thousand acres of conservancy land. Also have diesel trucks and 2 large mowing contracts, snowplowing....
Takes a lot of fuel

There was a post I read a few weeks ago. I am not sure where, may have been on here. Some thing like, "Shame on you people that kill animals for meat. Why don't you just go to the store and buy it where they make it. That way no animals get hurt." .

I can’t believe someone who can read and write - can really believe the above. No one can really be that goofy.

Really?

Just hay for me and plowing the road to the pavement. Tractors basically hibernate all winter and mowing is my yard and my rentals with a gas zero turn. I hate mowing grass anyway. About 40 gallons a day with mine each if I run dawn to dusk. Of course I can only run one at a time.

Hopefully your diesel trucks don't have red fuel in the tanks...lol

Genny runs off the bulk tank but it don't use much.

Both mine are pre 4 so no extra 'pollution' fuel used.

I never want to get that big. Being that large, it goes from fun to work. When it becomes work, I tend to get less enthusiastic about it.

My buddy down the road (seed farmer) has 2, 1000 gallon bulk tanks that get filled monthly, I'd hate to pay his fuel bill, but then he has a huge pole barn full of rolling stock, 15 full time employees and every piece of equipment is green (except his Pix-All and de-tasslers) and I bet everyone has a payment book attached too. None of it is over 3 years old. I do help him out once in a while for zip. Like running late model equipment even if they are all DEF units.

The bigger you get the more it costs but the profit margin tends to stay the same. Way more out and way more in but the bottom line remains stagnant.

Nah, its still fun....at least for us. We love it. (y)
Just delivered a small load of hay (6 ton) to a couple raising grass fed beef.
I grew substantially in size about 10 years ago and have been able to have a nice life for my family. I will probably undergo another expansion in 1-3 years. Should cross the 500 acre mark. 🚜

I retired from a well paying job with full benefits and a nice retirement at 56 so I don't have any desire to 'create' another full time job for myself. Between running hay and doing heavy fabrication and field welding, I have plenty enough to occupy my time and still have time to go out west hunting regularly.

For me, running hay will stay a hobby. How I like it. No pressure at all. Nice to only have one customer too, one that pays on time, a big plus.
