On a positive note, I hold oil stocks as a hedge against gas price increases.

It at least makes me feel better.

Operable U.S. refinery percent was around 82% in January. By the last week of February it was down to 56%.

In early January, oil was $48 a barrel. In early March, it was $60 a barrel.

So couple those two events with the normal switchover to summer blend, and you have fuel price increases.

Here's a site that lists diesel fuel prices per country: Diesel prices around the world, 08-Mar-2021 | GlobalPetrolPrices.com

What's interesting is that the US's price is low for a major industrialized country. Many of the countries with prices lower than ours (i.e. Iran: .45/gal) are big oil exporters or have governments that subsidize or mandate fuel prices.

Much of the current run up in US (and probably world) fuel prices is due to the OPEC+ nations cutting production last year, and not raising their limits even though demand has rebounded some since the COVID trough last spring. One article I found said they expect oil to reach $100/barrel later this year as people start driving more.

Will the US no longer be energy independent?

Back in the 70's conventional wisdom produced tax credits for installing wood stoves and the Whitehouse added solar... the thought was oil supply was being depleted into oblivion.

I bet no one thought US future would be energy exporting...

Plenty of $4 gasoline right now...

I'll wait a few months and then revisit this thread and you can postulate some more...

Wise men we have here!
Berkshire Hathaway has provided us a hopefully well funded retirement.
Doubled down last year on COP when the market crashed.
