Hello Everyone,

I've been lurking around here for some time and finally decided to register so I could ask a few questions.

We're currently in the process of building our dream home on 5 1/2 acres about an hour south of Seattle and I'll be buying a compact tractor soon. Lots of work in it's future from mowing fields, helping to clear land, brush hogging, landscaping, and some minor farm related tasks for a couple of horses.

I want to thank everyone for the huge amount of knowledge that you've put here already. Simply by searching I've been able to get dozens of questions answered and I really appreciate it.

Hello Everyone,

Welcome from NW Washington and the Skagit Valley. I'm on a shy 6 acres that was pretty neglected when we moved in. I was like you and didn't have a tractor and wasn't sure what I needed. Being a little short on ready cash we settled on a 25 year old Ford 1715 with a loader. It turned out to be a good choice here. It has 27hp, 4 wheel drive, and a gear transmission, and it came with a 20' deck over trailer, a flail mower and a box blade for under 10K. I found the tractor to be too small only a few times, and a little too big a few times, especially when trying to maneuver in tight places with the loader bucket.
Having used said tractor for nearly four years now I know it's abilities and inabilities and it's deficiencies and a list of "I wish it hads." One shortcoming that I corrected was adding a SSQA conversion to the loader. To me that would be a necessity. Other items I wish it had are a hydraulic top link which makes using a box blade a lot easier, Secondarily a third function on the loader, and at least one, maybe more remotes for the 3 point hitch.
I don't know your work situation, but if you are still working, consider a tractor with 35 to 40 hp to get the jobs done faster, if you are retiring, then a 25-30 hp compact tractor should do most everything you want, it will just take a little longer. Lastly, if you have trees to dig out or trenches to dig, consider a backhoe attachment along with the tractor.
Good luck and enjoy the new property, I know we do. It beats spending retirement wondering which wall to stare at in an apartment each night.

Hello from 75 acres in SW Washington (Lewis County).

I am guessing you are somewhere around Olympia?

Hello and welcome from SW Washington. We have 5 acres down here. Plus my mom has an additional 5 we help maintain.
I recently got an old tractor with low hours, a bunch of attachments, and trailer.
I added a 3rd function valve to it. It works great. I'll post more about that when I can. For what I do/ plan to do, I think the Kubota B2150 I have will do fine. It handles a 48" brush hog well, and the 60" box blade. As long as you know its limits, and stay within those, I can usually get big jobs done with a little time. I don't have near as much seat time as others here. So I can not make any recommendations.
Good luck with your search.
