7’ tiller advice

Woods is NOT a heavy duty tiller, and that is what he needs, even if he doesn't know it yet...

You need a HD tiller, IF you want a tiller that will stand up to lots of field acres of unknown conditions and last...

Of course, if you have easy ground all of the time, a lesser tiller will last a while.

BTW, he did say "best"...

You know what they say about opinions ..

I guess, but I've been doing custom tilling for 40 years, I have three of them right now, including an 80". One now, has over 2,000 acres on it...

Over the years, I've seen many "wanna be" field tillers bent and broken, so my "opinion" is one from experience, not what I read on line.

How many acres of field conditions are you basing YOUR opinion on???

I have a 6' Maschio tiller and it gets used pretty hard and never an issue. It tills dirt, clay drain tiles, rocks, steel, etc and keeps on going. It may fit your objectives since it's not the most expensive and not the least expensive either. I use it behind 43 hp shallow and 53 or 69 hp normally. I've used it behind 89hp but it's not rated for that and too much hp is a good way to kill a tiller. I sometimes till at slower than 540RPM and sometimes drive faster or slower for different soil tilths.

I've owned Howards before, and they are tough but parts were expensive and hard to get. Great tiller but I'm not even sure still in business. Things like Woods and all the short line stuff may be more homeowner oriented.

Whatever you get, "C" shaped tines use less hp and are easier on the tiller. You don't have to till to maximum depth to get the benefits of a tiller. I sometimes chisel plow first and skim till over that with the tiller at half depth. The drainage is better, surface just as smooth and is less destructive to earthworms.

What brands do you have? One would believe the OP would not be doing the custom tilling work the you are engaged in.

All three of mine are Howards... Custom tilling or not, if you want it to last a long time, in all kinds of field conditions, you better not buy a home owner tiller.

So, I'll ask again, how many field acres have you put on a Woods tiller for you base your opinion of how good a Woods tiller is??

Not fighting at all, you posted above strongly, of how good the Woods tiller is, like you knew more about them than me. I just wondered if you had more tilling experience than me, and if so, I'd love to learn something from you.

I also have some good Woods products, including three rotary cutters a back blade ect... That doesn't mean they are selling a HD tiller...
