Expensive might seem okay. Our hardware store which is our lumber source, burned to the ground a few days ago. So at least you have expensive lumber versus none.

Dang. Thats a big deal in small communities. The town I grew up in, a small chevy dealer burned down. The loss of jobs makes an impact.

Maybe it is time to buy a diy sawmill. We just don't have tall, straight trees around here much. Hmmmmm.

I've got Thousands? of tall straight trees, loblolly. I call them 2 x 4 trees because that's their future, soon as I die. Farmers don't sell farms, farmers sons sell farms.

I found a local saw mill which looked very very sketchy but, hes going to sell me 12 ft x 9 inch ship lap for $1 linear foot.

Locally, this giant house is being built by the river. Something like 19k sq ft. What is the green on the walls and floor? I wonder how much extra the high prices are costing this project?

How anyone can believe that their personal family deserves 19,000 square feet of resources and annual energy consumption is simply beyond me. What a disgusting monument to selfishness in a world that is rapidly reaching the tipping point. That place will be a prime target for the roving bands ready to eat the rich. And then maybe a dozen immigrant families can move in to share it, lol. ::rant over::

I recall taking down the remains of an old house built in the 1800s and the studs were larger than today's 2x4s. If they were actually 2"x4", I do not know. I recall square nails.

Yup, i've pulled a few old structures down, they were 2"x4" and 2"x6". They looked kinda weird for being so thick.

Yep, my house is made with 50% recycled lumber and 50% milled on site lumber. This was back in the day when they allowed this to happen. Now you can use home sawn lumber but you need an engineer to certify it after a certified grader has graded it. It is probably cheaper now to go that route than buy it at the yard. The government is looking out for the Weyerhausers and the other fat cat timber owners. Consider yourself lucky if you cam mill your own lumber and not need permits!

Because they worked hard to earn the money to afford it so they DO deserve it. Its their money, why shouldn't they build the house they want? It is not disgusting or selfish.

The place I'm in now is framed in rough cut red oak. Try driving a nail into it after it's been sitting since the late '40s
