Y'all Been Checkin' Lumber Prices?

I've used Azek decking and have been pretty happy, not real hot in the summer sun, impervious to water. Kind of expensive though. During summer, the sun beats down on that side of the house, all day long and i can still walk on it in bare feet.

I have had a composite deck in for about 22 years. Well worth the extra cost IMO.

What about jousts... the deck boards seem to last about as long as the jousts.

I've seen flashing to protect joists but have no experience

Tape the top of the joists with the same stuff used for water/ice barrier roof underlayment. They even make pre-cut rolls that are the right size. They'll last darn near forever.

With the aluminum system any reason to not put down pressure treated plywood covered with roofing felt it better and then out down the aluminum decking?

I started this thread to talk about aluminum decking specifically after seeing you bring the subject up here a couple days ago.

I gave away my aluminum decking samples from the 90s before I built my deck. My joists are steel, as are my columns that support them. I decided to go with PT plywood, then the surface was finished like a boat: fiberglass fabric and epoxy. Sand and titanium oxide in the top coat. Still holding up well after 20y.

Biggest problems with wood decks (redwood of PT) are they deteriorate rapidly and are kindling for a wildfire. We just had our deck/fence contractor pal do a TimberTech deck for a friend. Composite materials last longer and are less of a fire hazard vs. wood. Cost is similar to con-heart RW.

Besides Al, wood, and PE-composite there is also PVC (BrockDeck). If I had to do it all over, I would use ceramic tile over steel pan deck.

Oh, yeah, I used TimberTech composite sleeves over my steel 4x4 columns for a nicer look.

(Last local sawmill IS Big Creek Lumber.)

Owner's place almost burned down in last summer's fire. Not sure about the mill itself. Looks like this year's fire season now thankfully over.

There used to be 70 commercial sawmills at one time in the Santa Cruz Mtns.

Friends all burned out at Last Chance Mill Site including tractors

One tractor had tires and hoses burned… insurance settled but refused to haul away so friend tinkered with it… new hoses and fluids and wire and it runs good…

Can this be right? Or is there some error in this chart?

Lets hope an error, or I might have to go to HD and do some panic shopping.

It is going up, but that chart doesn't reflect the reality of it. Change the time frame of the chart to look at a one month window.

Yeah but it shot up 25% in one day. Concerning.

We're trying to get a bi-fold louvered door for my mother in-law's new upstairs laundry closet. Went to one store, COULD-NOT-GET-ANYONE-TO-HELP. All we'd get is "I'll call someone to help you." 25 minutes of that, so I checked their website and they had none. Left and went to another large store.

At that one, they showed doors that would work, but again, trouble getting help. Door I wanted was not easy to find. Finally found 'the old guy' and he helped.
- 167 bi-fold doors
- 37 bi-fold louvered doors
- 28 bi-fold louvered doors 32" wide
- 13 bi-fold louvered doors 32" wide white pre-stained
- 1 bi-fold louvered door 32" wide white pre-stained available

Guess we'll take that one.

Not in stock. Arrives December 1.

Also, 'the old guy' told me that lumber supplies are back to normal, and prices are way down compared to a few months ago. However, millwork, doors, etc. are on up to 5 month back order still.

I paid $3.59 ea for 8' 2x4s last week and Home Despot had a lot of them. Looks like the lumber profiteering is over.
