PS A 2017-19 Chevy Bolt burned the other day and did over $250K in damages to the property.
Owner says the car had Chevy's charge limit program update.

Looking like full battery replacement may be necessary after all.?

I was wondering how the Feds and States were going to replace gas tax revenues.

They are way ahead of me.

So you get a fed discount up front and a state charge on ownership.
Many states like CA are pushing for Electric autos, without the infrastructure to support them, or people with enough money to buy them.
It'll get there some day...

gas cars catch fire more often, they just do it usually when running down the road and not in a garage.

Usually if a gas/diesel vehicle catches fire it's because it was involved in an accident and the fuel system was broken (or something like a semi truck with a hanging brake).
It is extremely rare for a gas/diesel vehicle to catch on fire absent a traumatic incident that causes a leak in the fuel system.

you have never been to Brooklyn :)
Poorly kept cars with lots of salt damage and failing brake or fuel line fires seem to happen on the belt parkway whenever I drive it.
But is it easier or harder to put out a gas/oil fire or electrical/ battery fire, this I know little about.

Personally, I wouldn't call it a "state charge on ownership." I would say it's a partial accounting for the gasoline sales tax that will not be paid by the EV owner. To be more accurate, I think it would need to account for the number of miles that the vehicle is driven.

I also don't agree with the "fed discount up front." I think the technology should stand or fall on its merit. Especially with the high-end EVs, I don't see why the general taxpayer should help fund the individual enthusiast with his expensive car purchase.

We had a rash of cars burn up in the owners garage. Then they had a recall of 4.5 million vehicles.

"The faulty switch can leak hydraulic fluid, overheat, smoke and then burn, and risks causing a fire even when the ignition is turned off, parked and unattended, the NHTSA said."

Opps, while looking for this web site I found this one that says my KIA will catch fire and I should not park it in the garage until the recall fixes it.

Plus if you google fire/vehicle/recall you will find many more. They just don't make the headlines when they burn and fire departments, unless they know of the recall will attribute the fire to another cause.

The Polestar 2 (Volvo) should be a contender from China.
