Engine knock after injector pump and injector rebuild

Thanks Lou, but would it even run? It is hitting all cylinders, just has a loud knock. I've had this tractor for 27 years but was the only experience I had with diesel. I actually thought it was a rod knocking based on experience with gasoline engines. I had never heard of "diesel knock" until I started looking for answers. Dealer just keeps ruling out possibility of issue with fuel system. Not familiar enough with diesel to appreciate the suggestion of crossed lines. I will look into that, thanks again.

Is the knock every cylinder or just 1 or 2?
1 or 2 I'd go with crossed lines.
If it's a rapid knock installation and or timing.
Crossed injector lines would be similar to crossing plug wires.

They did drain entire fuel system, new filters and fuel just as good practice.
Would assume that professional mechanics would know to bleed but I will certainly suggest that.

Much thanks to all who have replied. Should be an interesting conversation come Monday.
Hopefully it is one of these and I haven't thrown almost $3k out the window!
Just because they claim to be pros don't mean much to me anymore, I sent off a three week old generator that quit putting out electricity under warranty work got it back about six weeks later and had to check the ser# to see if they matched that thing was nasty dirty but it was the same one so at home I started it up after putting clean fuel in after five minutes it shut down I took a better look at the fuel system and the tank was full of sand/dirt, had to do a complete tank line and filter cleaning. Apparently they left the machine in the yard with the fuel cap off or used one nasty over used fuel can to put gas in and test it with. Almost bet real money they trashed your fuel system, but I hope it works out cheap and right for you.

Thanks Will, it's not going to work out "cheap" since I'm now now about $3k into it. Ironically, it was running great but the control rod/rack sometimes stuck in off position. If it didn't start right up, I would take off the tappet cover and give it a light tap with a piece of bronze rod and it was fine. Never stuck during operation, only when stop solenoid took it to the off position. Bought new tractor, getting ready to sell this one, didn't really want to try to sell something that you couldn't just get on and start it. Now I can't sell it or even use it after spending three grand on it. Am hoping that we can figure this out. To be fair, the service manager has been decent with trying to resolve it, but he may be a little over confident in his mechanics. If I wind up taking it somewhere else and it IS just a timing issue or crossed lines then it will be a very different matter.

I appreciate all of the suggestions, this is a great forum.

No seems you got to let that person finish the job because of the timing is actually off in some tractor injection pumps can be damaged and then need a complete rebuild, and we know that ain't cheap.

Will, that's the rub. This is FOR a pump rebuild and no, it wasn't cheap. As far as they were concerned, they were finished. I refused delivery saying I was surprised they would even have loaded it up to return it like that. They are looking at everything but fuel delivery. I keep taking the conversation back to that. I think we are going to be at an impasse soon. I may have to take it elsewhere and if it turns out to be fuel related it is likely to become a battle over money. Hope it doesn't come to that but appreciate the suggestions and comments here.

Yeah buddy some shop workers wouldn't admit a mistake on their part rather take to the grave. You did right by not accepting it like that.

if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck it is a duck.
It sure sounds like timing to me.
it is not crossed injection lines. You couldn't cross a hard formed diesel fuel high pressure line if you tried.
Sounds to me like they have so much apart now even if it comes down to "timing" it won't be timing.
Chances are they won't just let you take it until you give them some $, your in a tuff spot.

Then if it leaves in a basket and goes to another shop, basket projects are almost always time and materials.

Good luck

I honestly don't think they would do that. The Service Manager has been very forthright in his dealings and seems sincere in wanting to get it resolved. I expect that they will get it back together and hopefully if it still knocks, they will double check the timing on their own. If not I will ask them to redo the timing. Either way, I am confident it will be running when it leaves there, even if it still knocks. Again, I appreciate the comments from all. This is a great forum!

Just got a call from the dealer. The owner got involved and took it on himself. Turns out that this model has an additional step besides gear timing that calls for adjusting the spill port timing. Once he completed that it started up and runs without the knock. They are delivering early next week. I have to say that they were diligent in finding the solution. Thanks to everyone who shared ideas and suggestions, much appreciated!

Update, tractor came back today. Sounds like it's old self. @RickB was spot on.
