Another couple gears wouldn’t hurt it.
I always lusted after a 7spd when I driving my buddies IH rollback with the t444e and 5spd. It needed all the help it could get!

This Cummins will run circles around the DT trucks I’ve had. I’ve never driven a 444 but I think they’re even weaker than a dt466. My buddy runs a loader in the quarry and there’s a truck with a 444 that won’t come out with over 7 tons on.

Agreed, the 444 is pretty much the same as the 7.3 powerstroke with a different HPOP and typically lower hp/higher tq. They are definitely not as strong as the Cummins in med duty applications and I don't think were offered above the 600/650 and IH 4700.

And the 7.3 was weak in a pickup. Who thought derating it and slapping it in a medium duty was a good idea? I really wanted something bigger than the little 5.9 but it actually does pretty good. If it had more gears or would be a lot better.

We have 2 Freighter medium duty straight trucks with the 5.9 and 6 speeds. No one will drive them. They are too gutless. We have some newer ones with the 12.7 Detroit and Allison's in them. Much better.

My truck isn’t geared to run over 60 mph and probably doesn’t have the power even if it did but it pulls good in that range. Also there’s a wide variation in power from a 5.9. I’ve seen them as low as like 175 hp to over 300 from the factory.

The 230 was a little weaker then I'd have liked but still didn't have any problems running 70-80 at 26k+ lbs.

My buddy had the same truck with the 260hp and it pulled pretty nice.

I think the Allison makes a lot of difference in how they pull.

The way they changed the output is similar to the Cummins where they are lower HP for longevity but have the higher torque output.

But yes it is a turd in the larger trucks, I think it was rated at 175hp

I’ve never driven a medium duty with an automatic other than a bus. You think they pull better? I have a 5500 with an 8.1 with an Allison behind it but it’s been non operational every since I’ve had it.

What? Only when compared to today's engines. Back then the 7.3 powerstroke was one of the best, most powerful engines you could get in a pickup and could easily last 500k miles.
They are even still sought after today by many.
