Do you know what the purple paint law is?

More than a few of the northern states have navigable waterways defined by a log length at spring flood, or some approximation thereof. Logs used to be a prime resource...not to be confused with lumber! Where I grew up, if you could get your feet wet, it was probably navigable.

I would like to think that western water rights would get redone in the interests of the public and the environment, but I am not holding my breath. Lawns and golf courses in the desert never made any sense to me. (Nor for that matter, rice or cotton in California)

All the best,

Peter

n Maine we can't prevent anybody from traveling on undeveloped land to get directly to navigable water; defined as anyplace which will float a 4 foot stick of pulp at any time of the year. Apparently that's unique to Maine and Massachusetts.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the land surrounding yhr navigable water is privately owned and is posted no tresspassing, you do not have a right to tresspass on private property to access the navigable water? (in my mind, a river or creek).

Depends on the state.

Virginia water rights get discussed EVERY year,, at this time of the year, in New Castle VA,,
There is this REAL nice kayak creek,, but the guy that owns the land really does not want anyone parking on his property while they are traipsing off to the creek,,
The road is state, but, too narrow to park along,, so,, the issue comes up,
again, and Again,, AND AGAIN,, AND AGAIN!!

I guess it’s all the folks wanting to use the creek for fun and at no cost against the poor guy who bought the land, takes care of the land, owns the land and pays taxes on the land and has to fix damage done by cars driving on his property day and night in all kinds of weather.

Do they also want him to blacktop the area and paint nice lines?

Perhaps, as a compromise, folks can pay $20 a car to park.

Or a bus company can ride folks in for a fee.

Or the government can find and build another access point with parking.

What about gun fire. My shooting range is very close to the water.

I recently had my prostate checked and yes I squealed like a pig. Any younger person here never had one take my advice: by sure your doctor has small hands and short fingernails.

You can walk in the most direct route possible, but once you get there you will have to stand or float in the water to fish, hunt, or whatever you came to do. That also doesn't give the right to walk down somebody's road or use their dock... It dates back to a time when the waterways were the nation's highways... and as I mentioned before is only true in Maine and Massachusetts. (Which were the same state until 1860.)

I've had a scope stuck up the other side on several occasions... something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. :(

They dammed a river to create an oasis from a desert... now it's coming home to roost. I feel bad for all of the people it affects but it was a desert to begin with, and nature strives to return to it's natural state. At the end of the day we all will feel it, as much of the country's food comes from the areas which are hit with drought now.

Oh, trust me, ALL of those options have been discussed,,
the land owner is old, and does not need $$$,, he needs his peace, and quiet.

The real issue came from 20 years ago, when he let people access the water,,
EVERY Monday morning,, he had a pickup full of trash left behind to deal with.

You only pick up so many OP's beer cans,,,
