It's the shaft from the clutch to the trans. The gears seem to shift and work solidly. The lockups occur regardless of gear selection, including neutral.

Is it possible to uncouple the propeller shaft without separating the tractor? It has metal covers over the couplings which are pinned to the shaft. I've removed the pins but haven't been able to slide the covers back to expose the couplings. Should they just slide back up the shaft? Not sure how to push them back without risking damage to couplings. The front one slides back and forth a little, the rear one seems frozen to the transmission shaft end and the shaft slides in and out of it just a little.

After using a screwdriver to listen, I do think it's slightly more likely the problem is at the clutch end.

I was checking the disassembly pictures of the service manual and it does look like it has to be split to take the shaft off. The couplers that look like a constant velocity joint won't be able to slide back even if there was enough spline length. The hub inside will just hit the tip of the shaft.

This looks like a formidable task, especially for someone with no available concrete. May have to haul it 150 miles to the nearest dealer.

You can split it on a couple sheets of plywood lying on reasonably level, flat dirt if you're motivated to take the task on yourself.

Thanks for that. That is what I ended up doing. (Actually OSB siding.) Broken gear on the main gearbox input shaft.
