Looking through old posts, seems to indicate this is “normal” for the Kohler powered 425???
Nope don’t like it…
About gave me a heart attack when I was mowing tonight.

Yeah
I don’t think so either

I do like the fact it has the word HOT on top. Pretty sure if this is normal that would be self explanatory. :ROFLMAO:

I should’ve thrown a steak on there

If that is a low light picture, it is normal for gasoline engine working at max HP, if that is taken in sunlight, it is not so good.

It was low light, almost dark
Only reason, it looks more like daylight, is I was under a dusk-dawn light when I took the pic
It still doesn’t seem right, lol

but engine is brand new,
starts, and runs fine, with no loss of power, no misses, backfires Etc.

Retarded ignition will run a red hot exhaust. But there will be other symptoms, like power loss.

These new fangled CCD pocket cameras screw up picture taking big time. Auto exposure on one aspect makes an adjacent detail all color crooked.

Here’s a pic in the dark, when I pulled into the shed

My PT180 does the same thing without full throttle. Think of the funny cars at the dragway with the open header single exhaust and you see fire coming out of each pipe.

I don't have a 425, but this has been a long standing issue. I would through the older threads, if you want to see more examples, and causes/solutions. One user posted a cut open muffler, which may give you some insights.
Overheated Robin EH72-FI (28 hp) in PT-425 solved

In my completely inexperienced couch potato eyes, it looks to me like the muffler is too restrictive. Several users have put on different headers and mufflers and the problem has gone away.

I would also observe that slight differences in fuel/air ratios, timing, and octane levels can have a big impact on secondary combustion in exhaust headers and mufflers.

All the best,

Peter

There's also excess heat in the tub. I added a fan (like the cooler fan) to the side. Helps.

I will probably end up doing that as well

Playing around with ignition timing would be worth the effort.

If these solid state ignition systems didn't make it so difficult.

Just getting to the points on the K582 is an exercise in sheet metal handling.

You might note that many chain saws incorporate spark arresters since apparently they are a source of fire starters.

Could be California missed including some categories of engine powered equipment.

Wow! That is some picture! I would show it to Terry at Power Trac and see what he says.

Make sure you have the right spark plug in it my friend had the same problem and he had the wrong spark plug

I suspect a timing issue. But if they told me that was normal I would be getting something else. I also can not imagine any manufacturers that would want the liability associated with that situation.
