Im with you on the first reason you cite, but not on the second. The Chinese polluted their way to success. And everyone knows it.
That's what I meant by a level playing field; environmental and labor laws are just two things which should be similar. We did our fair share of polluting in our day; I remember walking the bridge over a nearby river years ago and you could barely breath. Now trout are swimming around down there... although I'm still not sure I would eat them.
Another difference back then though is that we were helping to rebuild many nations which were destroyed during WWII.

How Elon Musk put the ‘sex’ into Tesla’s cars — and conquered America

I did not know Tesla was the 1st successful start up car manufacturer in the USA since 1925.

The photo of GM's red EV1 is nice.

Elon Musk's story remind me of Eli Whitney's engineering success against great odds.

That was then, this is now.
We started cleaning up our act 50 years ago and have made amazing progress.
They dont give a rip about the environment. The only thing they care about is polluting and stealing their way to world dominance.

I am not a fan of them. The Chinese Communist party runs the country and can be repressive. I read an article in the New Yorker about them cracking down on Xinjiang’s muslims. However when they support a business it is unequivocal

I think it might be because the biggest battery manufacturers are Chinese companies.
Tesla is the biggest battery manufacturer. Just the Gigafactory in Nevada, "In mid-2018, battery production at Gigafactory 1 reached an annualized rate of roughly 20 GWh, making it the highest-volume battery plant in the world. Tesla currently produces more batteries in terms of kWh than all other carmakers combined."

I should be fine. There is a charging station 25 miles from me and I have never seen a car charging at it.

We are SOOOOO backwards in northern MI!!!!
It is not a Tesla Supercharger. Those stay busy.

All it takes is a parking space and 30A at 208V or 240V and $500 to build what generically passes as a "charging station". I drive a Tesla. Those "charging stations" are token efforts by decision makers who do not have a clue. Don't get used because they are no use unless you have a 60 mile Fiat 500e or Nissan LEAF and have several hours or overnight to burn.

OTOH is exactly the kind of thing I have installed at home. I have plenty of "overnight" to charge and it does an excellent job.

The 4 strokes can be much quieter. The first time that I saw one I was standing just off a snowmobile trail watching a string of them go by. The last one was a 4 stroke and I was amazed at how quiet it was.
What always surprises me most though is that I can be standing 20 feet off a snowsled trail wearing my blaze orange vest; yet when a string or ten or more sleds go by, not one of theme even knows that I'm there.
Based on off-road motorcycle racing experience and having manned the pre-race sound check, there is no good reason a 2-stroke can not be as quiet as a 4-stroke. A 4-stroke with bad muffler can be much louder than a 2-stroke because twice as much exhaust passes half as often. For similar power a 2-stroke muffler is smaller than that of a 4-stroke because the frequency is higher.

Most off-road motorcycles use baffles packed with sound deadening fibers. These get packed tight, contaminated with oil and carbon, and no longer perform as new. Hence the testing at races. Too loud and you don't race.

If an engine is quiet then it is quiet because the designer and operator want it that way. Not because it is 2-stroke or 4-stroke.

There are some places out west where you need to pay attention to the next gas station, if not, you'll be sitting on the side of the road. No cell service and maybe no body driving by for a day or two.
when i was working i used to walk into an airport and buy a ticket, almost always 1 way, never had a problem.

walked into reno airport headed to las vegas, they had 8 flights, all full!

Spring break or something.

The rental car place had 1 car left, that chrysler they made look kinda like a 40 ford or something. Not a bad ride really.

The rental car guy said.....when you get to such and such town, GET GAS. Even if you don't need it.

A couple places there was no radio reception at all. Long long distances between anything.

A customer told me later they store many nukes out there, i saw the hundreds of the concrete bunkers.

Might want to recheck your facts:

Note also they make a point in the above article that the batteries are government subsidized. To what extent they are subsidized, is anyone’s guess.
But if we have to compete with CCP subsidies, basically ZERO pollution regulations and currency manipulation practices, then it’s unfair and we probably don’t stand a long term chance in the EV car battery manufacturing market.
At least not with the current administrations unfriendly American corporation tax rates and highly aggressive regulation practices.

See also: Death of American steel, automobile, etc manufacturing for more convincing proof.
