The question becomes how as a society to inform people of these hazzards so more people don't die?

Honestly, I knew nothing about manure pits before this thread, but if people keep dying in them (manure pits), why are not more people aware of the potential hazzards and what needs to be done servicing them?

Same reason people die in grain elevators every year... It won't happen to them.

In reality they probably were in that pit dozens of times with no problem and this time the air currents or lack there of allowed the gas to build to dangerous levels. Farmers have lost animals when barn exhaust fans quit.

lost a neighbor and his son this way about 9 years ago. Something broke in pit, dad went down like he had multiple times before to fix it, he succumbed so son went to get him.

One thing to remember about those manure pits is that gas levels can be low until the poop is agitated, then they spike dramatically, even to above fatal levels.

It really is a sad tragedy. Reality will be hard on this family and no idea what spouse and children any had (if given I did not see it). Sometimes all the common sense and knowledge is over come by being familiar with such a job and as been said doing it often. Best we can learn is to be careful, think and be ready. For when our time is called there is no pause button. I pray they were right with God.

There is a huge amount of awareness of this. Compare it to electricity - how many of us have been “hit” by 120v? Not bad right- but did you know that 120v kills more than all other voltages combined? “But it doesn’t seem bad - never happened to me - I’m always careful”. Would “more awareness” really help given all the awareness campaigns and warnings already out there?

I don’t KNOW what happened here but all the training says if one goes down you STAY OUT until professionals arrive. Yeah right - that’s my brother in there! I can’t let him lie on the floor, I’ll just go in and ….

At the end of the day, I learned something new. Manure pits are dangerous.

You have a manure pit, if you don't take the nessesary precautions, if may be a tragic death, but bordering along the lines of a ignorant death.

Gas mask won't do it. You need oxygen.
