Starlink

Thanks. That's really helpful. I have DSL now and it works, but it's slow and unreliable. I can get fiber, but it's about $3000 for the installation because I'm a long way from the last pole. I'm also in the queue for Starlink, but the power consumption has a major impact on me, and would probably require adding more solar panels, likely offsetting the installation cost of fiber. We have no cellular, and no prospect of it ever coming.
My two cents is if you can get fiber, pay the fee and go for it. I would if I could, but the local providers aren't even willing to quote the cost.

Spread over three years, that install fee is less than $100/mo, over five $50/mo...

All the best,

Peter

I think you are probably right.

And pay close attention to the local providers. For example Rural Mississippi got a big money dump and they have been wiring up the county - both by the Telephone company (which is burying most of it) and the Electric Co-op (which is stringing it on their poles).
Tremendous duplicity.
With new infrastructure bills going through Congress and the proven need for rural broadband they are liable to get funding to get fiber to your house if you have electricity.
/edit - for example the Electric co-op is predicting they will get to my area by June of next year, with 1GPPS (up and down) for $85/month [100MBPS for $55]. Presently I have 7 MBPS down and 0.7 up for ~$40.

Thanks for the information on the Starlink router. I assume it isn't wireless.

My Netgear Nitehawk wireless router, located in the house, has 6 ethernet ports of which I'm using 2. What I meant to say was, I won't be able to plug these devices, plus the Nitehawk wireless router into the Starlink since it only has one port. I understand that I can leave the 2 devices where they are and just plug the Nitehawk into the single port on the Starlink.

The problem is, the Starlink will be in the garage and somehow, I've got to get it connected to the Nitehawk in the house. I can't put the put the Nitehawk in the garage with the Starlink router due to the various adjustments and connections that I frequently change.

I'm looking at various ways to do this, hopefully using a wireless system of some sort.

Obviously I'm a novice at this so I appreciate your help.

it may hurt your speed some, but before I ran conduit and cat5 between my house and garage I used a Ethernet over power adapter and it worked decently. Easy to setup and not too expensive

Wireless tv antenna? i have not even started to look yet.

It would be nice if i could mount a battery powered or maybe solar wireless tv antenna for old fashioned over the air broadcasts.

i've got a metal hip roof and anywhere in the attic is bad news.

i'm not cutting a hole in the roof although, i've been thinking about running the cable up thru the roof via the plumbing vent i have yet to install.

Is there such a thing as a wireless tv antenna?

No. Against FCC rules to re-broadcast commercial OTA signals.

Starlink doesn't offer much information on this but on average, how long does it take to get the dish & receiver after you first sign up?

I know this time frame varies by location but what has been your experience?

Depending on your location it could take three days, how long it takes to ship or it could take 10-12 months. Some area's are reporting that when they signup, they get a message their area is full and may not receive a dish until sometime in 2023!!! I signed up in April and the message was I would get it "mid to late 2021". I'm still waiting.

Wireless is the way to go. Plenty of off the shelf stuff on Amazon to do it. We have an antenna on the roof of our house broadcasting the wifi signal. It is picked up by an antenna at the barn 500 ft away. It is all line of signt so you have to account for that. I did not do the install so I cannot comment on the equiment used. It works very slick. I can then put a wifi router in the barn so I have good internet signal out there now.
