Another update! Mowed the lawn again with no problems!

Rebuilt the carb mowed twice no more sputtering and dying! Even shuts off without backfiring at low throttle. Also getting a toro wheel horse 15-38 Hxl for free! Any thoughts on them? Has the 15.5 hp vanguard Briggs but how would it stack against my cub 2544? I think the cub is better because my old cub cadet 127 hydro and 1872 don’t have as much power or torque. The tranny in the 2544 is stronger and I like the engine better.

The Toro WH 15-38 is a 15HP 38" cut belt drive riding lawn mower not a GT (garden tractor) similar to any of the vertical shaft belt drive hydro lawn mowers out there.

But for free, get it running, clean it up and sell it.

When you say your 1872 doesn't have the torque of the 2544 - is this driving/mowing or?

Ah the old 1872 that thing was great. But compared to the cub 2544 driving and mowing the 1872 didn’t have the torque to get through things. I wonder if it had hydro problems because the motor is great. But yeah just not as powerful. I sold it a couple years ago.

The 1872 struggles when I would pull my boat trailer with it in the wet but the 2544 never stopped. That 1872 hated wet ground. The 2544 doesn’t ever get stuck. Not even if I try.

I've have the 1811 and now a 1864 too and they can tow/pull a lot - I pulled a 8x10' wide chain link fence dirt leveler with 300 lbs of weight on it, with dirt buildup was over 600Lbs dead weight behind my 1811 to grade my lawn - not a problem.

The 1811-1864-1872 are basically the same tractor but the 1872 is the SGT (Super Garden Tractor longer wheelbase) and the 2544 is the newer GT (Garden tractor).

What I am getting at is there isn't enough difference to make one pull/or get stuck vs the 2544 and in fact I think the 1872 would have been the best as a SGT.

Agree but I have never seen a 1872 as weak as mine was. It whined all the time really loud and never thought that the tranny was great in it. The fluid was changed.I think that the 26 inch tires aren’t great for those transmissions because they were the same as the standard garden tractors (1811, 782). I don’t want to get into a fight or anything these are just my thoughts and experiences.

Also can you put a 3 point on the 2500 series or only sleeve hitch?

My mower would surge when it would start the 15 minutes later sputter and die. What’s the cause?

Maybe residue build up with in carburetor put carburetor cleaner in gas tank, may take couple times

Be sure you have clear fuel line from the tank to the carb - free flow, no blockage. Have you replaced the fuel filter lately.

Also that fuel tank vent not obstructed.

My guess is something floating around tank and getting into filter...

Will it start right back up or do you have to let it sit for awhile?

could be fuel or spark or compression Pull plug when it stops and check for spark when engine is still hot. If possible check compression when hot.

Fuel loss: a short spray of flammable carb cleaner in the carb does it fire? If yes then you are not getting fuel and need to start fuel components.

You have three other threads on this including one where you said you'd gotten it fixed and it was working fine......

Has spark when hot. I could restart it but it would die with in seconds

New fuel cap and filter and fuel lines.

Yes fresh fuel filter and good fuel line

If it has spark and will restart points towards a fuel delivery issue but I would double check compression since that is also a little to no cost item and eliminates another potential problem. Next step is checking fuel flow into the carb which is more difficult since you can not see into the carb. Not common but float needle can stick closed preventing fuel from getting into the carb and this is difficult to ID again because you can not see into the float bowl.

Does you carb have a drain plug in the float bowl? Is it accessible when the engine is hot and not close to exhaust or any ignition point? If you can safely remove this plug with a hot engine it would tell you if the float bowl is full of gas or not.
