Just did the first hydraulic filter change on MX4700 with manual transmission. Owner's manual states 400 hours but I decided to do it a little early at 200 hours. Cutting the paint at the seam helped a lot, filter came off no problem. Fluid shows glimmers of very fine shavings but not extreme. Probably would have been better to change the filter at 50 hours but was going by what manual says. I noticed a couple of larger chunks on the magnet and wanted to compare to what others have found on their magnet after the first filter change. I have attached a couple of photos of mine. Not sure if this looks normal??

Would appreciate if others would also show some photos of theirs!!

Thanks in advance!!

Magnet is only an indicator, cut your filter open and look at what is being caught. If you have metal in the filter paper you need to figure out why.

It's not the large heavy stuff that the magnet catches that you need to primarily worry about, it is the metal if it is circulating in your system.

As it is a new tractor, likely that is just manufacturing flashing on gears and break-in wear on your swash plates etc. The filter element should be pretty clean. If not you may want to consider send a sample for analysis to find out where it is coming from.

A transmission specialist once told me that every transmission will have some metal in the oil. No way to avoid it he said.

M7060. @500hrs, first change as per the manual. (I bought it used)
Filters inside were fine, a bit of rubber gasket goo stuff. I rechecked them after 50 hours and found very little so likely leftover manufacturing bits, so the dealer says.

I changed my filter at fifty hours per the instructions. There were some metal shavings trapped on the magnet - not a lot. I was expecting a few after speaking with the local mechanic. It never occurred to me to take pictures.

Hey, I didn't see any magnets, just filters with shavings on them, did I miss something?

From the era when Kubota stopped cleaning out the drillings and machining debris. Tractor has run a over decade since w/o trouble but it was scary when I first saw it !! These are Hydraulic filters.

Next change looked a lot better.

Thanks for your responses!! I can see that perhaps my filter is not as bad as I thought. If I buy new equipment again I will change the filter after 50 hours regardless of what the manual says.

My 1986 M5030DT Kubota had a permanent magnet stem in the hydraulic filter. Clean when changing filter. Helped monitor if having a problem. Also had a differential hydraulic filter warning light on dash. Wished my newer tractors had these features.

Is anyone sticking a magnet to the filter housing? I have done than on a few filters and gearboxes. Noticed that practice on industrial equipment needing to run 24/7 for decades.

Sounds like a good idea as long as the magnet is in a place it can be cleaned or replaced and does not fall off. Otherwise it's a situation of capture and release.

I put a magnet on the outside and then make it stick with electrical tape.
IDK if it makes a difference but it only costs a foot or so of tape.

I changed everything at 50 hours on my M6040. No pictures. The oil filter - nothing. The two hydraulic filters - a few tiny, shiny chunks on each donut magnet.

I guess I don't get all the fuss about filter magnets. The filter media will catch far more than any magnet in any location ever will.
