Was in Vegas recently, and saw yet something else I've never before seen.

This pickup had "outriggers" on both sides-- hauling rebar on both sides. Trust me, if you were near that, you would not want to be. And bicyclist and pedestrians better watch out!

Quite common back in the day in Texas, New Mexico, Mississippi hauling oil field equipment and parts. Still seen ever so often. As long as its tied down and not obstructing traffic, might as well.

I was in downtown Newark NJ on a main 4 lane undivided roadway with a concrete surface driving a 1 ton C-30 with proper pipe racks on the passenger side. Truck was loaded with four 20' long steel T-skids used to deliver heavy mechanical equipment and were being returned for the manufacturers deposit. Car pulled out in front and brakes were locked up, at that point 4 torpedoes were launched and they traveled well over 100 yards down the road on that lovely slick concrete. Than god they hit nothing but there was a hell of a time re-loading.
How were they “proper pipe racks” if the load was launched? Not properly secured?

I put a threaded elbow with a pipe nipple to hook the ladder to prevent launch in a panic stop.

I guess 4 10' lengths would not work?
They are purlins for my 20 foot hoop houses so I would prefer to keep them intact. I like the ladder idea mentioned above but still need to come up with some type of clamp to tighten down directly onto the pipe. No matter how tight I tied them there is still the risk of slippage.

Barring that I will cut them in two, I do strive to be safe when sharing the roadway with other people.

But technically every pickup that doesn't have cab lights towing a trailer over 80 inches is not legal unless the trailer is tall enough and has them on the front.
I did not know this. 80" at the wheels at any point?

Adding a 90 degree elbow and pipe nipple to the pipe will greatly improve retention in a panic stop…

You mentioned that before and I plan to take it under advisement. My plan is to load it, then take a fast ride across the field and back to see if anything moves.

Some years ago, boss driving the truck. We had extra 12' troughs for moving concrete, stacked on the rack on top of the truck. I was sitting in the middle, bosses son on the passenger seat. Early morning and driving a side street in Seattle, squirrel jumps out in front of the truck, boss stomps on the breaks and the those troughs shoot on down the road. My big mouth, says to the son, "isn't that the stupidous thing you ever saw, but that squirrel's safe." But learned a valuable lesson on securing a load for those panic stops.

Body width. That's why Raptors and 4 wheel steering GM trucks have them. Normal full size pickup trucks are just under that. Mirrors and things like handles don't count.
