I need to build an equipment shed. I decided on a 20X30 and laid out the foot print. Then I looked around at all the junk that needs to go in it... and I redid the footprint at 30X40. I'm happy with that but then I remembered that I don't have any clue how to build one... I want to just do a roof under posts right now and add walls on 3 sides later (I'm trying to save money). I want one 40' side to be the front and open. On the front is it possible to just put 1 post in the middle and the 2 outside ones? Free span about 20'. Would you do just a sloped roof or trusses? Really I would like a set of plans to build to but I can't find any easily on google.

Please help!! :)

Price a 20' board vs two 12' boards and report back ;)

With no snow load to worry about I'd probably tripple up some 2x8/2x10 for a span like that with gussets. However you won't span 30' so easily, you'll need at least one support preferably two. I like to lay out buildings I'm building by the material available at my price before arbitrarily throwing some sizes around. Also, there's a program called "sketchup" you can download for free. Check out some youtube videos on how to design and layout sheds with it, very powerful tool in planning and building for us professional hobbiests.

20 foot spans are doable with the correct LVL beams. They are pricey however.

Look around for a used half round Fabric Storage unit . Sometimes people get rid of them cheap if the top Tarp is shot . Then install steel roofing on the frame with self tapping sheet metal screws . My neighbor did this to two of these and they have been up for ten years or more . He said it was about $700 for the steel and with one guy helping they did both in one day.

I also helped build a Corrugated steel shed which was much cheaper and faster to put up Really only needed a couple of cordless impacts and his tractor to hold them in place . He also built a 4 ft wood foundation wall on each side and we raised the panels and placed them on the wall . This gave him 4 ft of extra head room .

Dunno about you, but I'd rather have the roof OVER the posts.

Last roof metal I bought was $4.30 per linear foot.

Let me put a visual aid here. I'm no artist but something like this is what I have in mind. I haven't had luck finding any used enclosures and as you know steel is pretty steep right now. I may deck and shingle it as I think it would be cheaper than steel panels right now.

Am I on the right track?

Also I have a co-worker that is clearing land and has a bunch of large cedars that I might be able to use as posts. Would that be a good idea?

I did a 32 x 48 pole building, poles ever 8 feet on the 48' side walls and 32' clear span, I did wall in the ends, but the spec allowed both ends to be completely open without any posts. Mine was speced for heavy snow load so if you don't have that worry that is awesome.
