It’s just hard to believe you can buy a good, tough running tractor for 1/8th the cost of new! You do need to have $10,000 in reserve for a big repair, and the will to fix smaller issues, but that’s still a heck of a lot less.

You can do the same with cars, trucks, & machine tools too.


I'm not sure why, but we all know it's true. All it takes is will.

Economically I don't understand what happens in the future when today anyone can buy a used machine that can be repaired to be better than new for so little total cost.

Supply and demand.

IF more people thought that way there would be more demand for used stuff and less for new.....Prices would reflect that.

Stuff is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Manufactures getting $300k for a new tractor because there is enough demand at that price to keep the MFG happy. Less demand for big old iron because so many dont want to "inherit other peoples problems".

One of the advantages of buying used is that inheriting other people's problems gives a competent person the opportunity to fix them so that they aren't problems anymore.

Some people think that repairability is at least part of the reason why the older simpler equipment will continue to go up in price while the newer equipment goes down.

Used equipment has a huge advantage that new equipment can't have - it's been tested and the problems are known. The problems and the advantages are right there to be seen and priced accordingly.

One of the primary reasons for buying a new tractor is the ability to spec it out with exactly the options that you want. Oftentimes it’s difficult to find a used tractor in the model with options that you want.

You are showing your ignorance. My tractor was manufactured and assembled in PA. Only the engine is made by Mitsubishi in Japan.

I don’t think you have this correct!
Some small bits of fabrication were most likely the only thing that were manufactured here and the rest was built and shipped here only to be assembled here at least that was my take when talking with them at the plant several years back.

I have definitely worked 0% interest deals. Not the either -or ones where you pay up front. Good credit and knowledge of the world of finance has served me well in that regard.
