When I bought my place there was what appeared to be a pile of dirt at a discrete spot on the property. A few days ago I decided to reclaim and level that area. What it turns out to be is about a dump truck full of asphalt that someone oddly decided to cover with dirt. It has been there for gosh knows how many years and is now rock hard. My FEL won't put a dent in it and I am not anxious to destroy my tractor trying. I have a place to bury it if I could move it. I thought about renting a jack hammer and breaking it up, but at my age, my days of running a jack hammer are over.
Anyone got any good ideas on what I might do?

I think I would just dig a big hole right beside it and let it slide down and in. Top with dirt.

Asphalt won’t jackhammer very good. Even if it would they’re brutal tools to use. If your tractor can’t push it in a hole I’d get a bigger machine that will.

I have much the same situation, though worse. Left to me were about 30 truckloads of millings, but I was aware when I bought the property - they were not hidden. I've found that my 30 hp Kubota with back hoe handles the millings fine. Using the teeth of the back hoe bucket, I shave off a few inches at a time, turning the clumps into relatively loose gravel. Then I use the front end loader to scoop and move the millings. You should be able to do a 10 ton truckload in about 3 hours.

Millings aren't the same as a pile of once fresh material dumped and left to become one with itself.

Cougs, is this in a place you need? Can you just leave it? Bury it as suggested? Yard Art?

Is it someplace a contractor could get to if one was willing to reclaim and recycle it?

Rent an excavator, or tracked skid steer for a day. Maybe dig the big hole first if you can, to save time. Then pound away at it on someone else's machine, lol.

It can be reclaimed. Are u near a municipality that would want it? Of course u would need to allow their heavy equipment on ur property.

I suggest being careful about burying anything as some property sales agreements make you disclose anything about the property that is not visible to the buyer. Those little secrets can cost you big time down the road as you may just find yourself defending against a lawsuit in the future.

If I had that problem I'd call a local earthmoving contractor and pay the $140 an hour for a full size trackhoe (like a Hitachi 200) to come and bury the pile for you. It'd only take them an hour or two, and you can sit back with a beer instead of breaking your back and your tractor doing it yourself.

It'd be a lot cheaper than renting equipment too.

Cover it back up and call it an ancient burial mound. You could sell tickets for people to see it too.

If there is an asphalt plant (the place where they make the finished product you have), they might want it as part of their reclaim pile. Or at least accept it after you get it busted up.

I was thinking you could be the cool dad and let local kids jump their dirt bikes off of it. I be your insurance guy would love that.

Turn around and walk away. You never saw it, it's not there, and there's no reason to think otherwise.

Must be a thing? Saw a local asphalt crew bury their leftovers on a soon-to-be-developed lot near me. Told the developer and they had to come back and undo their own mess.

Don’t bury, you can open yourself to liability

No, I don't really need the area, but the mound just looks funny, unnatural and out of place. Now that I took all the dirt off it, it does look like an ancient burial mound. I do know a contractor with a big track hoe that could make short work of it, but his mobilization fees just to come here, before he even starts his track hoe up, is more than I would want to pay. I could dig a hole beside it. bit it would be a big hole, and besides that my tractor wouldn't have enough "umph" to even begin to push it in. I guess it will stay there for now and I will try to consider it attractive:(
