Being a one story building, it's possible the store was at least partially shielded from the higher winds by the taller buildings.

As an EX official, he would not have the extensive security detail and protocols.

RSKY, thanks again for the updates. Your comments and pics concerning Mike Pence confirms my belief of who he is.

VP Pence would have security. He chose to minimize that distraction.

^^^ The strongest Hurricanes to come ashore are in the 150MPH range, usually much less, more in the 100-125 range. They're spread out over wide areas which means a single building is likely to get winds from one direction at a time. They move across land at around 10MPH generally, so you have sustained winds longer. Few buildings survive getting hit by both sides of the eyewall at Cat 4 or 5 speeds, but many survive Cat 3 and below.

Winds in this storm were estimated at 190MPH or greater over a width of around a mile and was moving across land at around 60MPH, covering nearly 170 miles in about 3 hours. That means a single building was exposed to rapidly twisting forces from multiple directions in just a few minutes. Humans can't build much that will withstand that, short of poured concrete with rebar. But even at that, the Graves County jail was destroyed and jails are not built lightly.
Wind resistance goes up with the cube of the velocity. A wind 2x as fast does 8x as much damage.

Speaker at Church today much involved with relief effort and finances. He is on board of "Bread of Life" a charity of the Churches of Christ. In the Tennessee floods earlier this year they not only went there and worked they wrote checks to families and individuals in the hundreds of thousands. He expects much more donation money to come in for this. Churches all over the country will have a special donation this Sunday and next. Nobody in the group draws a salary.

The guy is also a chicken farmer. His generator alarm did not go off last Sunday when it had a clogged fuel filter. He lost about a third of his chicks before he could get the generator going and ventilation restored. Said it took three days to clean up the dead ones. When this batch is shipped to processing plant he will have to shut down because the hatchery was destroyed. Many farmers in this area depend on that for income. Many farmers have grain stored at the Mayfield Grain Company. All of their huge grain bins were damaged with the tops blown off some. Also cover on huge amount of corn stored on ground completely gone.

Thanks for update. Had not heard of Bread of Life. Googling it shows many organizations with the name.

We donate to churches of Christ disaster relief. They have sent lots to the area.

I will try to get donation information posted here before the day is out. NO MORE MATERIAL THINGS ARE NEEDED. They are having a hard time storing and distributing supplies. For example, for the first few days the water system was down. They worked to first get power to the pumps and get leaks repaired so pressure could be built and maintained in the system. That was accomplished and pressure has slowly built until it is now normal. Our boil water advisory was lifted yesterday. I believe there in one system in the county still having to boil. We were receiving huge amounts of needed bottled water and the need was gone. Then Al Roker showed up with TWO SEMI LOADS OF BOTTLED WATER. Good intentions but three days too late.

What is needed is some type of shelter people can live in while rebuilding. And people need cash for incidentals. Also cash for clothing. And cash for tools. And cash for Christmas gifts for their kids.

You get the idea.

Toured sister's house again yesterday with her showing me things the adjuster pointed out that they had missed. Windows are double paned and all appear to be very dirty. Sister had tried to wash some but the adjuster said the seals were broken and the dirt is between the panes. They will have to be replaced. Large cracks between the walls and ceiling in nearly every room. Adjuster poked in several places at that joint and the plaster fell off. Other things she pointed out my sister and BIL had not noticed. They are lucky they have a house. The church across the road from them is completely totaled. Nothing can be saved.
