They put up a new camera in Duluth, actuality this was shot from Superior WI of the Cort crossing the harbor to the BN ore dock in Superior. At about 4 minutes, a fox is seen running across the ice.

I remember years ago when I worked at GW Industries on the Cuyahoga at collision bend, the vertical lift bridge there went up and for some reason lowered when the ore boat was halfway under it. Last minute the bridge operator realized the boat was underneath and reversed the bridge but it was too late. The boat hit the bridge deck with the aft end, took off the funnel and all the stuff sticking up in slow motion. I was standing there watching. It was a surreal scene.

Needless to say we got the refit as GW was a refitter for lakes boats.

I looked for but could not locate a GW ship yard. Gone? I had freinds try to get me to work with them at Frazier (spelling?) in Superior WI.

Lordy. Such big ships - such narrow passages. I can see how wind would be such a large factor in navigation.

Rolf, they have thrusters and seems all lake boats do these days. Generally these are 1000 to 1600+ hp powered props that are used for steerage. Some have them in there sterns as well. In the 1000ft boats, these are 8ft props.

Looks like that lift bridge is still there, but permanently raised and no longer used.

I've often wondered why the newer ships' bridges are all the way aft.
Seems like the older ships had the bridge on the bow and another deck house all the way aft. I'm assuming the aft deckhouse controlled the engines and rudder. I'm also assuming the newer ships' small deckhouse is for the forward watch
