Snow Forecast For Virginia

I’ve seen 2” to 8” on the weather app, currently they show 5”.

Here we go again... the weather liars are predicting 6 to 8 inches for us on Sunday.

I have been watching that system since Monday and it could be pretty serious. The weather models are still duking it out and have been pushing the track north/west at first, then back south/east. Someone is going to get 15-20" or more and someone is going to see some ice. I hope by Friday the models converge with some confidence. I already stocked up on diesel for my generator. Next milestone is whether I hook up my snow blade to the tractor...

This is what the models were suggesting on Monday, put us in the 15" range:



It moved north/west a lot, suggesting more of an Appalachian runner, but now it's coming back south/east.

So now that everyone is going to freak out due to the last storm, we probably won't get anything.

We will get something,, our location is pretty much the center of the Bulls Eye,,
The current prediction is 14" before Monday morning.

I have had snow (just a little north of Roanoke) when Roanoke got none.
Actually, that happened last weekend, Roanoke got nothing, even on the grass
I was REAL close to having to plow my driveway.
Luckily (for me) it was too cold to sled ride,, the grandchildren would have had me pulling them up the hill.

Our location can run 10 degrees cooler than Roanoke, that makes a BIG impact on snow accumulation.

I guess I will install my rear blade on something before Saturday,,,,,,,,,,,,,

If by blasted you mean the 3-4in estimate on that map, then yes
At least the latest maps show us not getting hit as bad, I'm still waiting for the snow/ice to melt off the shop roof enough for the insurance adjuster to inspect

There are SO MANY weather maps,, it is almost unbelievable,,
AND, they vary so much,,
I think that is why they can be so variable in the predicting.

There are SO MANY weather maps,, it is almost unbelievable,,
AND, they vary so much,,
I think that is why they can be so variable in the predicting.

For snowfall prediction, the main ones are the Euro, GFS, and NAM weather models. If you can watch all three, and they disagree substantially, well then its hard for the meteorologists to know what to say, especially several days ahead of time. Usually by a day or two before the storm hits, all 3 models agree pretty well. And then you can review which model nailed it from the start, and which ones were all over the place before converging on the correct solution.

We use WAZE on our phones. It is an absolute god send when travelling since it will re-route you away from trouble, sometimes many, many, miles away from the trouble spot. You have to have faith in it since many times there is no obvious trouble when it is telling you to turn off of your planned route. One example: my son was leaving Raleigh, NC to head home in Charleston, SC after one of the hurricanes and WAZE sent him to Charlotte instead of I-95. He did not believe it and ended up getting stuck in flooding in NC on 95 for several hours.

That happened to me. My iphone GPS told me to turn off and I didn’t believe it. Stuck in traffic - next time I will obey!

But golly gee whillakers it must be so warm in VA for all this.


I still say, I'll take a foot of snow instead of an half inch of ice. Since I leave the property so rarely, snow doesn't affect me much. Ice bringing trees down can cause all sorts of problems.

If you tune in any weather forecast from a DC TV station all you can hear is the back up alarms as they change the forecast from 8 inches or more of snow to a couple of inches and rain.
