what on earth does electricity cost near you?

Current bill is $380USD , been hot here. Around .14 for a KW. Usually 150-200 with cooler weather.
Have to change vendors here and there as they keep raising rates since state allows just about anyone to be an energy provider. One actually doubled my KW cost in one month. Dropped them like a rock. A lot of scam companies allowed by the state. Finally signed up with NRG and they have been ok so far.

My gripe is the "renewable energy surcharge " Cloudy North Carolina has vast fields covered by solar cells. And more coming. They are only installed because of state mandates and tax benefits. So we get shafted twice, directly through the monthly bill and indirectly through tax payments.

In kansas City it is 10.44 cents/kWh.

Now, I could not resist this. It is true that a fireplace draws heat from the house. The fire creates a updraft of air that is replaced by air from within the house. Some fireplaces have radiators and fans which may help replace lost heat. A fireplace might feel good while sitting in front of it, but it does lower the temperature of the room. From a heating point of view, it is a loss.

So, in answering the question, if you heat with you fireplace in the summer, it might work as well as using your air conditioner in the winter. Best Wishes.

Total for 4699 kwh $390.04

We are now on 'Smart meters'**so I'm guessing there are some surprises in the future.
Quebec has contracted to export power so I'm guessing we'll be throttled back at peak times or see high demand hour rates like industrial consumers get charged.
Pretty soon we'll have to cook and do laundry off peak hours, problem being I have not yet seen washers or driers that have timers.

** They claimed smart meters were to save costs of meter readers but those things can be programmed remotely to do what they want, or so I believe.

VAT here is a combo of Fed Tax, and Provincial Tax, so it does vary across Canada. More typically recognized as HST in Canuck-speak

Our "official" top rate is 15%, in certain Provinces.

Some Western Provinces have no official sales tax, so they just show the Fed one at 5%.

BC looks low, but that's just (weed)smoke/mirrors..... they like to stick an Eco Fee on anything/everything instead.....

I remember when Newfoundland was at around 19%; it got rolled back some once Hibernia kicked in...
