LouNY - I'd heard about these gas/diesel engines, but never knew how it worked. I'd heard it was a separate gas engine that became the "starter" for the diesel. Your explanation makes more sense.
The separate gas engine was Caterpillar's method. IH used the method described above, with little chambers off the cylinders that were opened to reduce the compression for starting.

We had a "new-fangled" TD-18 on the farm in the later years, but mainly used TD-40's for farming when I was a kid. They were hand-cranked, so the compression release was necessary for cranking, as well as to allow use of gasoline to warm up.

jkk04 - Don't know about that termination date. You look pretty spry to me. Keep going until they have to carry you out. Your heirs will have to deal with the property, but they'll be inheriting it's worth so let them deal with it.
It also looks like a beautiful piece of property.
Actually, I tried to sell the big toy a couple years ago on craigslist.
Many people were interested then a young guy to buy my toy seriously.
but somehow, he missed the day to pick it up. I was glad he didn't show up because exactly the same feeling as you.
However, I am so sorry for the lonely dozer. I haven't operated it for the last several years.
Just make it run occasionally for maintenance.
Sadly, nobody in my family is interested either.
That is the reason I am letting it go to a young guy who needs it.
Thank you for your input.

Are you in NorCal?
I’ve only heard the term “digger pine” in CA and those look like valley oaks in the video.

Yes, I live in Northern California.
The following 3 different trees I just took this morning are most existing in my property.

This valley oak tree which is falling leaves during the winter season.

This is a digger pine tree not falling leaves during the winter season.

This is a live oak tree not falling during the winter season.

I hope to identify the trees easily.

A couple of things stated in the video that were wrong, in that when you pulled the start lever out, it OPENED a third valve in the combustion chamber that contained the spark plug electrodes, which also reduced the compression ratio when running on gas. It also closed a valve in the intake manifold that routed intake air through the carburetor and closed a switch that sent power to the ignition system.
I grew up crawling around on Dad's TD14 back in the 50s and 60s. Later he had a couple of TD18As, a TD20 and a TD24. I always though that system was much better than the pony motors on CATs. Those pony motors were a pain in the ass, but we never had problems with the IHC starting system.
